- Jan 1, 1863: Lincoln (white Republican) issues the Emancipation Proclamation freeing slaves in rebel states.
- April 1865: Civil War ends. Confederacy crushed.
- June 19, 1865: In remote Texas, Union General Granger finally tells the last ~250k Confederate slaves they’re free — **over 2 years and 5 months** after the Proclamation.
- Dec 6, 1865: 13th Amendment ratified, **constitutionally abolishing slavery nationwide**. Passed and signed by white legislators and a white president.

So this “holiday” celebrates the day slow-ass mail and Texas holdouts finally got the memo that white Union soldiers had already won the war and secured their freedom at the cost of ~360,000 Union dead.

Made a federal holiday in 2021 for obvious political reasons.

The men who actually ended chattel slavery in America — through blood, war, and law — were overwhelmingly white Americans.

I asked @NC_Governor's office about it, they sent my email to Dept. of Natural and Cultural Resources (NCDNCR). That dept. told me the withdrawal was due to a cost est. of $100K.
Sen. Alexander, co-chair of the #ncga semiquincentennial committee, sent a letter to Stein urging him to reconsider.
Alexander's office tells me Ann Evangelista, the Legislative Affairs Director with NCDNCR, is meeting with him tomorrow about it. Evangelista has been the point of contact between the committee and NCDNCR for America 250 celebration work.
I contacted the Fair organizers and am waiting to hear back.

Samuel Davis (17) tried to buy tobacco in San Antonio, Texas and was denied by the store clerk because he wasn't 18 and therefor legally prohibited from buying it 🚬

Mr. Davis then stabbed the 25 year old store clerk *multiple times* until the clerk died, choking to death on his own blood, because he wouldn't sell him tobacco 🔪

Mr. Davis was then arrested and his bond has been set at $500,000.

Taxpayers will now spend months/years on his criminal trial and then spend millions of dollars housing him in a taxpayer funded jail.

There are multiple angles of security camera footage showing Mr. Davis killing the clerk; guilt isn't a question.

Advocate for the death penalty (quickly) in cases like this accordingly...
