On this day in 1983, Fidel Castro announced the founding of the Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology in Havana.

The pioneering centre, which developed and produced Cuba's Abdala COVID vaccine, now features on the 50 peso note.

On Sept 3, 1979, Fidel Castro opened the Sixth Non-Aligned Movement Summit in #Cuba, the first ever in Latin America. Despite the U.S. blockade intended to isolate it, Cuba hosted the world. Fidel was elected chairman, amplifying the Global South's demands. 🇨🇺
