๐จNew Paper Alert๐จ
Southern California waters are lit up with noise pollution ๐ข๐ฅ๐. The Port of Los Angeles and the Port of Long Beach are the busiest shipping ports in the western hemisphere, supporting transits from container ships that radiated noise throughout the region.
@NOAA_CINMS We hope these methods and results can be used to identify regions for noise reduction efforts, as well as to model scenarios to identify those with the greatest potential to support marine conservation efforts ๐๐๐ณ.

New paper from PhD candidate Vanessa ZoBell!
This project was a multidisciplinary effort involving marine scientists, industry, naval architects, and policy experts. We need all hands on deck when exploring solutions for the modern ocean. ๐ข๐

New year means new papers!! Our new article on #toothedwhales presence at three sites in #Hawaii over the past 10 years is now out in Ecology and Evolution! https://t.co/sw1XQ9AO5e
Announcing the first seminar of 2023!
Next week we'll hear all about the neurogenetics and ecology of cetacean vocal behavior from speakers Brigid Maloney (@BrigidMaloney) and Natalie Posdaljian (@illuminatttttt) ๐ณ

What does a marine sanctuary sound like? ๐๐ @Sanctuaries' new SanctSound web portal allows you to explore the acoustic richness of the underwater world, aka the marine soundscape. Researchers with @Scripps_AEL & @Scripps_MBARC contributed to the project: https://t.co/SMHjLsGMxl
It's Happening TODAY!!!! The 2022 Seatech Symposium is this afternoon @Scripps_Ocean!
2:30 - 4 pm PST in Sumner Auditorium
Students will share exciting & important results on acoustic behavior of humpbacks, sperm whales, narwhals, Pacific white-sided and Risso's dolphins.

Blue whale calls still decline in frequency but at a slower rate. #PLOSONE: Update on frequency decline of Northeast Pacific blue whale (Balaenoptera musculus) calls https://t.co/5aSMhmrwR0

.@solsona_alba uses 15+ years of data (!) showing less beaked whale activity with sonar at daily & annual timescales.
Hattaras whales rarely hear sonar & likely respond at MUCH lower levels than California, where sonar is common. Important results at #ESOMM2022 w/ @Scripps_AEL
We are advancing the Bioacoustics Stack Exchange proposal!!! Now it's time to COMMIT. Next, we have to prove we have community to keep it alive #ESOMM2022 Will you join us?

Annebelle Kok estimates that airgun noise is traveling >3500 km through the ocean and raises concerns about the need to consider management at these huge scales! Really cool and important work from @Scripps_AEL and #ESOMM2022
