Too often, corporations and outside interests meddle in politics.

I joined MMOP today as they turned in over half a million signatures to get their referendum on the ballot.

It's a big deal. It would close the pipeline of political money from corporations in Mighigan.

On a recorded phone call in 2021, UnitedHealthcare employee Dave Opperman and nurse Victoria Kavanaugh discussed the decision to deny coverage for Christopher McNaughton's ulcerative colitis treatment. Kavanaugh shared the news that a contracted doctor had concluded the treatment was "not medically necessary." Opperman laughed.

"I knew that was coming," he said.

When Kavanaugh mentioned that McNaughton's family might appeal, Opperman was direct: "We're still gonna say no."

McNaughton had spent years finding a treatment that worked. A Mayo Clinic specialist - one of the top gastroenterologists in the country - had crafted a specific high-dose combination of two biologic drugs that brought his severe, crippling disease into remission after he had failed every other treatment available. His bills were running nearly $2 million a year. United had flagged him as a "high dollar account."

When an outside doctor named Nitin Kumar reviewed the case and concluded that McNaughton's treatment was not only necessary but that reducing his doses risked cancer, hospitalization, and toxic megacolon, Kavanaugh moved to suppress the report and send the case back to the doctor who had already denied it. "I didn't because it shouldn't have existed," she said in deposition.

The United medical director who reviewed the case had not practiced medicine since the early 1990s. He did approximately a hundred reviews a week. He said he copied and pasted the nurse's recommendation and typed "agree." Asked whether he gave any weight to the treating doctor's opinion, he replied: "Yeah" - meaning no.

United reported $20.1 billion in profit that year.

Detroit public schools just unanimously passed a resolution endorsing the Invest In MI Kids ballot initiative. This initiative seeks to tax Michigan’s
1% and direct those funds towards our public schools. This would create an additional $1B in funding per year that would have to be spent on public education.
