You don’t need to get a Harvard MBA to be a great SMB owner.
Start visiting businesses in your local community, talk to the owner, and see if you could do that job. Just remember, if you are buying a business with <$400k SDE, you are likely buying a job.
@ColumbiaETA Pro: Hopefully you are from the area and you will have immediate credibility with sellers. Con: Tend to be less focused on industries so harder to get up to speed on each business
Fun part of ETA community is you learn a lot about all types of businesses and everyone willing to help. Was special that Ari of Arosa who runs great home health care business gave me a call (and a teammate) to talk me through thinking about health needs (& not in their area)
My wife and I have been building our home cleaning co for 18mo. Today, we own an asset that's worth more than our house (~3x SDE) and we paid for it in sweat.
Granted, it's a small house and a small biz (for now), but that's still amazing to me. #entrepreneurship is powerful.
V2 is looking to bring on LPs for the first time. Would love to hear from people that want to invest in or learn more about the micro cap PE space. DMs are open #smb#searchfund
@ColumbiaETA On the positive make sure to look for any large owner insurance or pension expenses that will not be a go forward cost. Sometimes they forget about those items!
@braden_live @jarrydosborne I think a lot of the recent trend towards self funded has to do with frothy investor landscape. Many of these equity investors for self funded deals are really buying something that looks much more like expensive debt versus equity which creates poor alignment with the searcher
