Through interviews with key figures like writer and director Tazewell Thompson, actress Lisa Arrindell, and Dr. G. Preston Wilson Jr., the director of the Fisk Jubilee Singers, Trae delves into the heart of this moving story. Tazewell Thompson shares his personal connection to the Fisk Jubilee Singers and his passion for bringing their story to the operatic stage. "I saw a documentary about the Fisk Jubilee Singers, and I said, this is fate. I must do something with this," Thompson recalls.

Lisa Arrindell, who plays Ella Sheppard, the group’s assistant director in the production, speaks to the deep emotional resonance of the music and the story. "There are records that the moans in the belly of the ship...those songs came out of that," she shares, highlighting the profound connection between the music and the lived experiences of African Americans. The opera also features the talents of 13 remarkable opera singers, bringing the powerful music of the Fisk Jubilee Singers to life.
