Kerala is trending this week, so let me offer a comparison nobody asked for.
I have spent my whole life in Gujarat. I am still afraid of its breakfast.
Everything here arrives fried. Find a proper meal while travelling, and you must hunt down a food park.
Those food parks serve sambhar and chutney with great confidence. The confidence rarely survives your stomach for minutes.
Kerala does breakfast differently. Every small eatery, even in the remotest corner, manages to be both hygienic and proper. I do not mean the big chains everyone already knows. I mean the tiny places with no signboard worth mentioning.
Roads tell a similar story. Kerala's roads are narrow, but they are laid with real intent. Asphalt reaches almost every home, in almost every direction.
Leave the cities out of this — Kochi's roads deserve a sad column of their own. Rural Kerala, though, quietly outperforms most of urban India.
Gujarat has no such ambition. Outside the highways, roads seem designed for tractors, not cars. Nobody complains. Everyone has simply adjusted, the way Gujaratis adjust to most things.
There is more.
If you are a Malayali living in Kerala, social life finds you whether you seek it or not. Deaths, baptisms, weddings — the calendar is always full, and everyone is invited.
These gatherings are where you meet your relatives. Everywhere else, you mostly meet your friends, and quietly agree that this counts as family enough.
I will not dwell on the clean air, the water, the hills, the wildlife. That list writes itself.
What I will mention is the weekend. Kerala offers enough recreational spots to leave in the morning and return the same night, tired but satisfied. Wherever you are.
Gujarat has the longest coastline in the country and treats it like a liability. Thirteen hundred kilometres of coast, and not one proper seafood joint along the way.
A state with that much shoreline choosing to ignore its own fish is a mystery I have stopped trying to solve.
Till about a decade back, I thought Gujarat is my home state. That changed slowly. No offence to Gujarat though.

To whom it may or may not concern and especially to my well-wishers:

On the evening of Saturday 06 September 2025, the Rohini Courts in New Delhi, passed an ex parte interim injunction against me in a defamation suit filed by Adani Enterprises Limited, the plaintiff. The case concerns my reporting and my analytical articles and statements on the corporate conglomerate headed by Shri Gautam Adani, one of the richest men in India and the world. Ex parte means that the court order was passed without hearing my version of events and circumstances.

This is the seventh defamation case against me filed by lawyers representing Adani Group companies from 2017 onwards that are currently pending in various courts of law, five in Gujarat, one in Rajasthan and the latest in New Delhi. All these cases are being contested.

I have been a journalist for almost 50 years, and have worked for numerous organisations across print, broadcast, and digital media. I am accredited by the Government of India’s Press Information Bureau (PIB) for more than 35 years. In addition, I am an author, publisher, a maker of documentary films and music videos and an educator. I have been a freelancer for around 15 years.

Along with me, four other independent journalists Ravi Nair, Abir Dasgupta, Ayaskant Das, and Ayush Joshi are respondents in the lawsuit. We are all independent journalists, who have, from time to time, collaborated and worked with one another to write and put together articles and videos.

I have noted media reports that allege that I have published “false and unverified reports, aligned with anti-India interests, and have been continuously targeting Adani Enterprises … disrupted [its] projects with ulterior motives.” The reports further allege that my “interference has led to the straining of the balance sheets of the Adani Group and delayed key investment plans.”

I wish to state with all the conviction I can muster that these allegations are false, unfounded, and scurrilous, and have been made without granting me a right of response. I stand by my reporting which is verified, factual, fair, balanced, unbiased, and conducted without fear or favour.

I have full faith in the judiciary of India and remain confident that all the articles that I have authored or co-authored and all the statements that I have made are not just truthful and accurate but always in the public interest. I intend to vigorously contest the defamation claims made against me by Adani Enterprises Limited and will place my arguments before the court at the earliest opportunity.

Monday musing: Nothing quite exposes a failed criminal justice system than the contrasting manner in which GN Saibaba and Gurmeet Ram Rahim were treated by law. Saibaba, a DU prof, who passed away on weekend was branded ‘Urban Naxal’, arrested under UAPA, denied bail on health grounds for years though he had 90% disability and was confined to a wheelchair. He did not even get parole to attend his mother’s last rites. Saibaba was acquitted of UAPA charges after spending nearly a decade in jail. By contrast, Ram Rahim, a rape and murder convict, routinely gets parole especially just before elections and is treated like a VVIP with netas lining up to take his darshan! Andha kanoon? Or ‘no’ rule of law? Think.
