ERITREA — For nearly three years, the Abiy Ahmed regime has been moving toward an open confrontation with #Eritrea.

From illegal claims over Assab to statements questioning Eritrea’s sovereignty, the regime’s actions have fueled speculation that it may eventually attempt to use force to try "invading" the Eritrean port, capacities aside.

So far, however, no military actions has materialized largely because Eritrea has chosen a cautious response and avoided being drawn into a military conflict on Abiy Ahmed's terms or timetable.

Meanwhile, the regime has become increasingly consumed by mounting internal conflicts that continue to drain its military, economy, and political capital.

Eritrea’s best strategy for now is, therefore, not to be distracted by the desperate provocation acts and instead allow Ethiopia's internal crises to further erode the regime's strength from within.

With #Sudan and #Egypt also facing the consequences of Abiy Ahmed’s confrontational foreign policy decisions, closer regional coordination may become increasingly important in countering what they perceive as a "threat".

As long as Abiy Ahmed continues to pursue these political and security policies by choice, the priority should be to keep his regime busy by its own domestic challenges at every opportunity.

When the circumstances are favorable, meaningful and practical steps should be taken to accelerate political change in Ethiopia. 💯

Under the incompetent Abiy Ahmed, the ruling Prosperity Party has become a liability to Ethiopia itself and an increasingly serious threat to regional stability and the security of its neighbors.

The @AbiyAhmedAli regime launched a major aerial assault today, July 3, targeting Amhara inhabited Kebeles of Bajin, Wofchi, and Mergajiregna in Kiremu Woreda. Ethiopian Air Force jets reportedly bombarded the areas more than 70 times over a two-hour period beginning at around 12:00 p.m., causing significant destruction and civilian casualties.

One local source reported witnessing at least seven drone strikes and 28 jet and helicopter strikes in his area alone. Another witness said at least 35 strikes were reported in Madu Wereb, Tikur Bahir, Menkesh Terara, and Buna Wenz. A source who spoke with Ethio Focus News also reported that multiple helicopters were used in attacks lasting several hours, with two pairs of helicopters reportedly conducting strikes for about 40 minutes before being replaced by another pair.

The Ethiopian Air Force has reportedly been using the newly built Gudina Tumsa Airport in Nekemte city. The aerial bombardment reportedly caused casualties among a significant number of civilians, though obtaining further details has been difficult due to a communications blackout.
