Reds recolonized 720Km of Anglesey, cross Menai Strait into Gwynedd & also recover in Clocaenog forest. The habitat hardly changed. Same number of domestic cats, lots of cars & people. So these not the barrier. It was grey squirrel removal that facilitated recovery. GREY SQUIRREL
In England & Wales, the 1967 Forestry Act, ignores the presence of red squirrel, dormice or other endangered species in a forest. Licences to clear fell can not be refused because of the impact on populations. Wildlife needs better protection.
