Over the weekend, former president Uhuru Kenyatta and his family attended the wedding of one of their heirs. It started at Don Bosco Shrine in Upper Hill, where a simple church wedding was conducted before everyone proceeded to Muthaiga for a garden reception. The reception was simple, classy and full of fun and games.

At some point, the guests basically turned the place into a live podcast for the rich. There was no MC shouting Bag niya nini? No helicopters dropping wash wash mikoras & politicians, no bridesmaids dressed like Christmas decorations, no balloons fighting for oxygen. Just a simple, expensive, well themed wedding. Even the wedding dress was not complicated. Just simple, decent and demure.

No 17 layers of tulle, no dress occupying three seats in the reception, no bride looking like she’s carrying the entire wedding budget on her shoulders. Lakini huyo fundi Mmoja needs to stop being monotonous,, amekua too much!! 🤦🏽‍♂️

There was all sorts of food including sea food that guests didn't even bother to eat. The Alcohol that was being served there was nothing short of Don Julio & Glen, pombe huwa tunazionea tu 1824 where the wealthy go to enjoy rhumba & old school music on Sundays.

Indeed, there is a difference between being rich and being wealthy. Behavioural patterns tell the story. One side is loud, the other is calm. One side wants everyone to know they have money, the other side assumes you already know.

We call it old money. It doesn't shout for attention. Old money speaks in whispers. Sometimes the only evidence is the family tree, the surname and the fact that nobody is asking “How much was the venue? Guests came carrying cheques, small boxes probably gold watches & diamond necklaces.

Nobody is coming to rescue you and your relatives from poverty Njoki. Life is not a Nigerian movie where a mysterious billionaire uncle arrives in a Range Rover & asks for your hand in Mareej.

With your certificate in catering, a father’s homestead sitting on a 50×100 plot somewhere in Kiharu, and your biggest family investment being a chicken that disappears every Christmas, sahau kuolewa kwa matajiri. The best you can get may be a teacher, police officer or fellow hustlers like us.

But getting married into generational wealth? My sistaa that one requires more than a nice dress, good selfies, nose ring, tattoo & good blow job skills. The rich may marry the rich, wewe shinda hapo na hizo standard zako za matakataka na kwenyu hakuna mtu ashai kula sushi. Kama kawa sisi walala hoii hatuna maoni, Letu Jicho tu.👀
