💷 Every year, millions in UK taxpayer subsidies prop up animal agriculture, an industry built on exploiting sentient beings, keeping prices low, profits high, and animals trapped in suffering.

Pigs, chickens, cows, and others endure short, confined lives while the government continues funding the very system causing their pain. They’re treated as production units, not individuals.
Why the subsidies? Governments claim they ensure affordable food, support farmers, stabilise markets, and keep producers competitive. Powerful agricultural interests and longstanding policies also keep these subsidies in place.

But there’s a better way. Redirecting funds to plant-based and sustainable food systems respects animal rights, improves public health, and reduces environmental damage. Plant-based agriculture uses fewer resources, cuts emissions, supports biodiversity, and offers new opportunities for farmers and communities, without exploitation.

It’s time to end subsidies for animal agriculture and invest in ethical, plant-based solutions.

What is speciesism, and why should we care?

Speciesism is the assumption of human superiority that leads to the systematic disregard of the interests of our fellow animals. It is the belief that being human is a valid reason to deny other animals basic moral consideration. Speciesism targets others who are not humans, and is a form of discrimination comparable to racism and sexism.

Cows, like the one pictured here, are subjects of a life. They have desires, preferences, and a will to live. Their inherent value demands that we treat them with respect, not as resources or commodities, and not as means to our ends.

But in our current system, animals are denied their rights and are instead immorally classified as legal property. This means they are not recognised as individuals with rights of their own, but as objects to be bought, sold, used, and killed at the discretion of their 'owners'. This status strips them of moral consideration and reduces their lives to commodities.

Treating sentient individuals as property is fundamentally unjust. It allows their interests, no matter how significant, to be ignored whenever they conflict with human desires. As long as animals remain property, their exploitation will always be permitted and protected by law.

Dismantling speciesism requires more than kindness. It requires justice. If we reject the idea that might makes right, then we must reject the idea that humans are entitled to dominate others simply because we can.

Ending speciesism means challenging the everyday norms that make animal use seem normal, natural, or necessary. It means refusing to participate in their exploitation. It means going vegan, not as a diet, but as a social and ethical commitment to nonviolence and equality.

Animals do not need bigger or better cages. They need liberation.
