Taking a cue from yesterday’s outing, Day 2 of the workshop has been nothing short of impactful thus far!
While leading the talk on conflict-sensitive reporting, Taiwo Hassan (@Hazzanjustice) said that conflict patterns may differ across regions, from the Northeast to parts of Southwest Nigeria, but the underlying reality remains the same: what people know about these conflicts is largely shaped by the media, and that places journalists at the centre of both the problem and the solution.
In the subsequent session, panellists stressed that at some point, journalists must decide what they stand for, because the profession demands clarity, not just in writing, but in purpose, and those who treat it casually may survive for a while but rarely last.
Furthermore, speaking on audience engagement and distribution platforms, Lateef Sani (@Lateefsanni_) emphasised some key issues confronting the journalism profession, like declining newsrooms, limited resources, the rapid rise of social media, and how information now moves faster than ever. He pressed on the importance of understanding how information flows, how audiences engage, and how platforms work and use that insight to create a workflow that is consistent, strategic, and able to cut through the noise leading to impact.

In the session on modern investigative methods and tools, Silas Jonathan (@Silas2Silas) highlighted how journalists can use digital tools to collect and verify data across multiple platforms to corroborate information, trace patterns, follow conversations, and even uncover trails behind suspicious activities.
Speaking on the fundamentals of solutions journalism, Mojeed Alabi (@Musikilu), said that Positive stories are everywhere around us, but they rarely get the attention they deserve thereby widening the gap between the issues that be and the needed actions to resolve them.
To wrap up the day’s engagement, Dapo Olorunyomi (@DapsyOly), stated that at its core, storytelling is a structure — a deliberate way of connecting the writer and the audience, and in the process building understanding, and creating empathy. According to him, this turns information into something we can feel, something we can relate to, and something that can inspire change.

Read this article to see why I strongly posit that privatisation or commercialisation of essential services is making Africans poorer and eroding already lacking standards of living across the continent.
#Privatisation was once heralded as the key to #Africa’s economic revitalisation. Decades later, the reality looks very different, argues @SefaUpfront.

Nigerian Military did not pay their electric bills, so their electricity was cut off.
Guess what they did next? Today, they stormed Ikeja Electric Office and started brutalizing the staff. This is Nigeria.
Shame on the @NigAirForce for this disgusting display of abuse, indiscipline and mindless brutality. Unfortunately, this absurdity only borrows a page out of the playbook of consistent harassment visited on civilians by Nigerian military 4 no reason. Heads need to start rolling.
The Nigerian Air Force reportedly attacked and vandalized the head office of Ikeja Electric (IE) and its Ikeja business unit earlier today. The attack, which stemmed from a dispute over electricity disconnection, escalated into physical violence against the company’s CEO, Mrs. Folake Soetan.
According to eyewitness accounts, the Air Force personnel stormed Ikeja Electric’s headquarters in Alausa, Lagos, demanding an immediate reconnection despite allegations of unpaid bills and past electricity theft. When their request was denied, the situation quickly escalated.
Sources confirm that the military personnel went on a rampage, breaking down doors and forcefully searching for the CEO. Upon locating Mrs. Soetan, they allegedly assaulted her and, in a disturbing turn of events, forced her into the trunk of a vehicle within the premises.
