In our bilateral talks with President @EmmanuelMacron Macron at the National Palace, we addressed a range of bilateral and multilateral issues. I expressed my appreciation for his and the French government’s support in the renovation of the National Palace and the ongoing restoration of rock hewn churches of Lalibela. During our discussions, we explored potential collaborations in various fields, including increasing French investments, as well as strengthening ties in education and culture. I also emphasized the importance of building on our longstanding historical relations.

BBC’s “Newsday” Program: President Macron’s visit to Ethiopia.

Yesterday I was interviewed on the program. Key topics I discussed (link below to listen).

1. Increasing trade and investment between the two countries especially since, according to the IMF, Ethiopia is now the world’s fastest growing economy (ex. a small petro state in SA).

2. The recent entry into the Ethiopian market by Carrefour, the giant French multinational supermarket group, and purchases of billions of dollars of Airbus aircrafts by Ethiopian Airlines.

3. Significant FDI into Ethiopia. Data shows Ethiopia was the 2nd largest FDI destination in Africa last year, with China as the largest foreign investor. The U.S. too is expanding its trade and investment engagements. For instance, American financiers are expected to participate in the financing of the huge $12.5 billion, 110-million passenger airport currently under construction in Ethiopia. Recognizing this reality, France, the 7th largest economy in the world, with significant historical ties to West Africa, but now shifting to Eastern Africa (where the economic growth is the highest), is re-positioning itself to trade and invest more in Ethiopia despite significant competition from the two super powers and many others including investors from the wealthy Gulf States. The strong personal chemistry between President Macron and Prime Minister Abiy of Ethiopia plays an important role in the enhanced partnership between the two countries.

4. Common geopolitical interest and Ethiopia’s role as the regional anchor to help maintain stability in Eastern Africa. This is particularly critical considering the current war in the Middle East and the closure of the Strait of Hormuz which has created global fuel shortages and economic chaos around the world. Note: France is host of this year’s G-7 summit.

Held substantive bilateral discussions with @EmmanuelMacron at the National Palace today, covering a broad range of issues of mutual interest.

We also presided over the exchange of key agreements between our two countries, including the €54.6 million loan agreement for the Renewable, Integrated, Sustainable Energy and Digitalization Program, as well as the exchange of the new Framework and Roadmap for the 150MW Geothermal Public-Private Partnership engagement (PPP).
