Businessman Breaks 3-Year Silence on Betrayal by MySol
North West businessman Benjy Maponya has broken a three-year silence over what he describes as a devastating betrayal by his former best friend and business partner, mining businessman Solomon “Solly” Soka Madibela of MySol Holdings.
Maponya claims he was the true founder of the N4 Cluster mining operation, after being appointed by Samancor alongside VJ Coal for an opencast project at Buffels West. When VJ Coal was liquidated, he says he brought in Madibela as a technical partner.
“We used to share a 2kg chicken portion. I used to borrow him my car. We were like brothers,” Maponya recalls, saying he trusted Madibela with his life.
According to Maponya, a joint venture was signed, but payment disputes soon emerged. He alleges he was eventually cut off from his shares and given conditions to continue receiving payments, including leaving his wife, moving from his Hartbeespoort home to Majakaneng, stopping soccer tournaments, community projects and house-building initiatives, and deleting his Facebook account.
He also claims the relationship deteriorated further after he refused to accompany Madibela to a sangoma.
“Tell them how you wanted me to leave my wife and promised if I did, you would continue to pay me,” Maponya says. “I refused all of it.”
He alleges he was subsequently locked out of the business premises and that the tender was re-advertised and absorbed by Madibela’s company, despite what Maponya says was an agreement covering the life of the mine. He maintains his contract remains valid and says Samancor holds the official records.
The fallout allegedly destroyed Maponya financially. He had bought a R2.1 million Hartbeespoort home, paying about R115,000 a month, with only R700,000 remaining. After nine months without income, he says he was forced to surrender the property.
Maponya and his wife later moved to Majakaneng, where they built a modest three-room structure on family property.
“I cannot challenge it because I cannot afford court,” he says. “I decided to leave it and start a new life with my wife—the woman I chose over money.”
Despite previously declining interview requests from two major South African broadcasters, Maponya says recent attempts to humiliate and silence him have forced him to speak.
He claims he is being targeted because he is fighting for justice for an unnamed person allegedly murdered by five known suspects who remain at large. He further alleges that attempts have been made to frame him through fabricated rape allegations and leaked voice notes.
Ahead of his public statement on 7 October 2026, Maponya says he expects paid social-media trolls to target him and fears for his family’s safety. He recalls an incident three years ago in which he alleges “fake police” were sent to his home to intimidate his wife.
Maponya is now appealing to the broadcasters who previously approached him, as well as independent funders, to come forward as he seeks justice and protection for himself and his family.
