Formula weights in Kansas have followed more of a seasonal pattern than during 2024. This week's data showed the average weight in that state was 2.3% above last year, at 921 pounds. Will the weights increase over the coming weeks and stay above last year or drop below?
The latest Federally Inspected slaughter report showed fed slaughter in Region 6 (TX, OK, NM, LA, AR) dropped 8,500 head week-over-week, a 10.8% decline. Year-to-date, fed slaughter in the region is 4.4% below last year and 9.9% below the five-year average.
Select grading in Nebraska has declined by 1.6% over the past two reported weeks, falling to 7.95% which is 2.70% below 2024 and 5.24% below the five-year average.
Australian cattle slaughter has reached the largest volumes since November 2019, bringing the year-to-date total up 10.4% from 2024 and 29.1% above the 3-year average.
Texas formula weights increased 17 pounds last week to a new record of 908 pounds. Meanwhile, Nebraska formula weights declined 22 pounds to 919 pounds, which was 1 pound below last year.
Wholesale boxed beef prices have rallied nearly 10% over the last 6-weeks. The latest data showed last week's sales volume totaled 7,354 loads or close to 4% higher than last year, after jumping 18% on the week.

So far in 2025, the monthly average number of cattle on feed in Alberta and Saskatchewan is down 6% from the 3-year average. That is roughly the equivalent of 64 thousand head per month less.
During the week ending May 31st, Choice grading in Nebraska fell 3.43%, bringing the total to 69.07% - 2.65% below last year and 4.2% below the five-year average. #cattle#choice#beef
Last week's total formula slaughter fell by 37,640 head to 184,013 head. Although it was a holiday week, formula volume was 17% below the comparable week in 2024 and 15% below the three year average.
Texas formula weights increased 17 pounds last week to a new record high of 904 pounds. TX formula weights continue to run above last year with last week's weights 3% above the equivalent week in 2024.
During the week ending May 23rd, beef imports passed for US entry grew 7.1% from the prior week to 38,022 MT — a new record-high volume. Brazil was the leading source of imported beef that week, with volumes jumping to 12,292 MT compared to the prior year’s volume of only 1,921 MT.
The Federally Inspected slaughter data for the week ending May 17th shows beef cow slaughter totaled 47,354 head which was 7,242 below last year. Year-to-date beef cow slaughter is down 17.2% compared to last year and 27.1% below the five-year average. Region 7 (Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, and Nebraska) has seen the largest decline in total head count year-to-date, with 78,900 fewer head slaughtered, or 28.6% lower than last year.
While this year has seen the highest nominal retail beef prices on record, the inflation-adjusted values (using 2010 base) have yet to exceed the peaks from 2014-2015.
