⭕️ Two Israeli female soldiers photographed themselves posing beside a young, blindfolded Palestinian detainee who appears to be a minor and proudly posted the image on Instagram.

The post, which circulated widely online and was reviewed by Drop Site News, was uploaded by Israeli soldier Nikol Stelmashvski as part of a 20-photo carousel containing additional images from her time in Gaza. Her account [@ nikol.stel, IG] has since been made private after the photo drew public backlash.

The image is the latest in a documented pattern of Israeli soldiers publicly sharing evidence of Palestinian detainees being humiliated or abused. Such conduct violates international humanitarian law, which prohibits the degrading treatment of detainees.

Marie Gluesenkamp Perez introduced the Protecting Columbia River Salmon Act, on July 8-9, 2026 to amend the Marine Mammal Protection Act and let federally recognized tribes with ancestral ties to the Columbia River lethally remove California and Steller sea lions along a stretch of the Columbia River, from its mouth to McNary Dam, across Washington and Oregon. Tribes could do the killing themselves or designate someone to do it.

She argues that the current removal system is absurdly expensive and barely used. She explained at a December 2025 hearing that managers are permitted to remove up to 450 California and 176 Steller sea lions over five years but come nowhere near those numbers, because the process requires trapping, identifying, hazing (literally “shaking a can of pennies at it”), retrapping, then darting. She put the cost at over $38,000 per removal, about $203 per salmon saved.

The salmon damage is severe. Nearly a quarter of fish at Bonneville Dam showed sea lion bite wounds in spring 2025, and one estimate showed that sea lions consumed 40% of a year’s spring Chinook run.

Her bill is backed by the Cowlitz Indian Tribe and the Confederated Tribes of the Chehalis Reservation. The White House issued a Statement of Administration Policy supporting it, but as of the bill text’s receipt on July 9 it had no cosponsors.

Opponents argue that the predation is dam-created, not natural, and the bill inverts cause and effect. Patrick Christie, a UW professor who studies marine conservation and Indigenous-led recovery, says it isn’t possible to restore Columbia Basin salmon by managing predators alone, because the basin has been massively altered by hydropower. About half the salmon’s traditional habitat is now inaccessible, blocked by industrial dams. Remaining habitat is degraded, with water warming behind reservoirs and fish killed in turbines.

The Marine Mammal Center argued in a 2020 statement on Columbia culling that the conditions threatening salmon “took generations to create,” and that blaming pinnipeds year after year reaches for “an easy scapegoat.”

When the 2018 removal expansion went to public comment, fewer than 200 of 22,000 responses supported it. But Gluesenkamp Perez argues that the MMPA “limited Tribal agency and the ability to undertake the traditional population controls that balanced the river ecosystem for centuries.” Keith Hyde of Northwest Steelheaders told her that “he doesn’t dislike sea lions per se,” he “just thinks they belong in the estuary or the ocean.”

Trump today claimed Iran’s revolutionary regime killed 54,000 protesters at the start of the year, inflating the 40,000 figure he repeated through much of the US-Israeli war to justify and build support for U.S. action.

There is no evidence for either figure. HRANA, which has received U.S. funding, documented about 7,000 deaths, including many Iranian security and police. Iran puts the death toll just above 3,100 and says rioters killed civilians during protests that were overtaken by Israel- and U.S.-backed armed elements.

The Belgium-based Hind Rajab Foundation has filed a criminal complaint with prosecutors in Rome against Israeli citizen Arik Ben Asulin, who the group says is currently in Italy.

The foundation alleges he participated in war crimes, crimes against humanity, and acts of genocide while serving in the Israeli military’s 749th Combat Engineering Battalion in Gaza. The complaint cites his alleged role in the destruction of the Netzarim Corridor, Al-Azhar University, and Gaza City’s Shujaiya neighborhood, relying on satellite imagery, U.N. findings, investigative reporting, and Ben Asulin’s own social media posts.

According to Il Fatto Quotidiano, it is one of 90 complaints the foundation has filed in 30 jurisdictions worldwide.
