Isabel Rose, a 26-year-old British woman, reported a man to Hong Kong police for rape in early February 2024 after travelling there to visit him. He was arrested.
Two days later she was arrested for blackmail. Evidence showed she had demanded £100,000 (about US$133,000) from the same man she had accused.
The case went to trial. District Court Judge Adriana Noelle Tse Ching found it crystal clear that Rose had fabricated the allegation to extort money. She accepted the man’s account in full, describing him as honest, credible and reliable, while rejecting Rose’s evidence as dishonest and unreliable. Rose was convicted on both charges: blackmail and perverting the course of public justice.
She was sentenced to six years in maximum-security prison. Her lawyers asked for leniency. The judge declined, noting Rose had shown no remorse for her “wicked” and “evil” conduct and had taken advantage of the man’s kindness and romantic interest.
Rose is now serving her sentence at Tai Lam Correctional Institution.
The man she falsely accused had his life disrupted for months over an allegation a court has confirmed was invented.
