Sources close to Pezeshkian say Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr has resigned from the Supreme National Security Council (SNSC), but Pezeshkian has refused to accept his resignation.

Earlier this week, hardline sources reported that Khamenei had appointed Mohsen Rezaei as his representative to the SNSC and as its secretary.

Zolghadr currently serves as Khamenei’s representative to the SNSC and as the council’s secretary. The SNSC secretary is nominated by the president and approved by the Supreme Leader, but the position is typically held by one of Khamenei’s two representatives on the council.

That makes Pezeshkian’s reported refusal to accept Zolghadr’s resignation particularly strange. Pezeshkian has no control over whom Khamenei chooses as his representative, and it seems unlikely that Zolghadr would have submitted his resignation without Khamenei’s approval.

Mojtaba Khamenei’s absence appears to be creating considerable confusion within the regime—but also opportunities for competing players to take greater risks, test the boundaries of their authority, and push their own agendas.

A constitutional monarchy is not incompatible with democracy. Have you never heard of the United Kingdom, Belgium, Norway, Sweden, the Netherlands, or Denmark?

Iran under the Pahlavi monarchy offered significantly more political, social, and personal freedoms than the so-called “democracy” of the Islamic Republic, which has ruled through repression, censorship, and violence for nearly half a century.

Instead of making dismissive comments, ask yourself why so many Iranians who once chanted “Death to the Shah” are now risking imprisonment and death while calling for the return of the Pahlavi name. That shift didn’t happen by accident—it happened because millions have experienced the reality of the Islamic Republic and reached their own conclusions.

Before acting like an arrogant schmuck it would be wise to understand the history, the context, and what Iranians themselves are saying.

Some try to weaponize that against him. I see the exact opposite: it is one of the strongest arguments for the sincerity of his commitment.

He had other choices.

With his name, education, connections, and international network, he could have left politics behind decades ago, entered business, built considerable wealth, and given himself and his family a far easier and more private life.

Instead, he chose Iran.

He chose decades of political struggle, scrutiny, attacks, threats, and having virtually every aspect of his life dissected all without turning his opposition to the Islamic Republic into a salaried career.

There are plenty of people who have made careers and livelihoods out of “fighting” the Islamic Republic.

Reza Pahlavi could have made money doing almost anything else.

Instead, he has spent decades of his life advocating for a free Iran.

That is not a weakness.

That is sacrifice. That is commitment. And yes, that is something to be proud of.
