If you think back to the 80s, was there a game you played without really knowing what the goal was?
One of the weirdest games I ever played - simply because I had no clue what was going on back in the day - was Wizball (Sensible Software, 1987). So many times my brother and I just started it, over and over again, never really grasping the concept. Only many years later (and finally understanding it) I have it another try, and what a game it is!
The concept is pretty nuts: In the once colourful realms of Wizworld, where the evil Zark has stolen all the colour, making it dull and grey. It is up to Wiz and his cat Nifta to restore it to its former brilliance as Wizball and Catellite. Ok then, let's go!
Design and music/sound were stunning though, which is why we still played it even when we didn't have the slightest clue what to do.
#ScreenshotSaturday time! Working on new track shortcuts for even faster lap times. Plenty of stuff still left to polish up😅Wishlist to experience it soon!
Ahaha😀there’s no harm in dreaming big, okay? A girl’s gotta manifest somehow!✨I just need a fabulous, powerful, slightly dramatic title for my engine, bcoz if I’m going to build it, it might as well sound iconic.😅💃💅🚀

SUPERHEROES. 'Hulk.' (2003.)
It wouldn't be a Hulk movie without being 'misunderstood' and this movie certainly was (as much as it was flawed.)
After all, with the director of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon masterpiece in charge of the 'Incredible' Hulk, what could go wrong?
It could be guilty of another 'Superhero' movie that tries to do 'too much' (Monster Pet Poodles? *Looks sceptically...) and 'another' origin story that doesn't have the faith of the sacred manuscript from 1962. Yes, we know a gamma bomb (and yes, we know there is a 'symbolic' gamma bomb mushroom 'boom' test somewhere in the movie...) doesn't turn people into 1 ton green behemoths but suspension of disbelief is what fuels our love of people running around in purple, torn trousers. (How do they stretch that far without causing Hulk's green skin to go red with embarassment as the trousers 'explode' off following such a gigantic transformation?) 🤔 But once you begin to start 'teasing' threads from the quasi-logic tapestry of 'Superhero' lore and origins on the path to 'translating' the sublime ridiculous to movies? That's a bit like 'picking apart' the people you 'love' in 'relationships...'
You can end up losing 'the seminal magic' that makes something special.
We feel the 'best' bits of this 'Hulk' movie are where the 'jolly green' giant is on 'home ground' running around the desert in a rage fest! It's far more in the spirit of the early 'mystique' of those desert obsessed stories from Jack Kirby's Hulk 1-6. (1.15 from the clip below? Ouch. We never noticed that before... Nothing like taking a tank turret to the 'tender' regions of the 'bread basket.' No wonder he screams at the sky! 😡 That's going to hurt in the morning. 😳)
If it's not Tanks? It's helicopters like mechanical gnats swarming around our misunderstood anti-hero. The action is visceral and exciting! These are handled with a similar flare for panache as the Tank scenes from the much hyped (at the time...) Ang Lee's balladic action credentials!
Where things begin to go awry (and, we have a list somewhere...) The absorbing man (also being the Hulk's father) and also be the ret-conned abusive father (a family that lives on a military base) who was sowing the seeds of rage, experimenting on his son to be this future DNA science project? For us? This 'Follow the Science' (what could do wrong, eh?) approach to retconning Origins? *Shakes head.* 🤯🤕 It's a bit of a reach and then some. And there wasn't a word of it for hundreds of Hulk issues before the writers got bored of doing 'Hulk Smash' and needed 'a thing' in the psychology of the Brain vs Brawn debate.
Jennifer Connelly (a good actress...) did a decent, emotive job as 'Betty.' Not sure she is, though. Any more than Eric 'Bana' is 'Banner' or Norton or Ruffolo is Banner... Thought the casting on Thunderbolt Ross was decent.
The Movie does a sound job with the whole duality of Banner vs Hulk...*(The 'Puny Human' mirror scene? Darkly hits different, home and true!) as some might say the character of Banner is the 'support' role to the 'star' character? The Hulk. You can't wait for him to 'Hulk' out and begin to 'flip out!' with maximum 'h-arnage!' 🤯😡💥🤕 (Could that be said of a lot of superheroes? Not to dally too long on the secret I.d stuff?) 🤔
Another strength of the 'Hulk?' The nod to the movie's comic book origins with multi-panels where your eyes are teased where to focus! Instead of being 'static' panels from the comics? You have multiple 'panels' of cinema! So COOL! And? Under used in superhero movies!
The Hulk movie is only guilty of multiple moments of excellent promise. The bits where Hulk is leaping in the desert and 'flying' are pitch perfect. Capturing the character's inner B-Movie monster Xen. The Hulk is clearly a classic Frankenstein Universal monster inspiration. The Hulk doesn't talk in this movie apart from that gripping mirror scene. He doesn't have to. The acting is all done through body language and action...gesture. There's no mistaking how the Hulk FEELS. Hulk is that EMOTIONAL guy who's not frightening to express his INNER feelings. Yep. It's decent. Imperfect and much better than the 'incredible' Hulk 'Norton' movie that followed it. And it's no more guilty of that than any other imperfect superhero movie (that could apply to all of them.) We can certainly understood Alan Moore's frustrations with translating comics to the big screen. He may argue that you don't need to. Comics are a valid medium in their own right and don't need to be movies to have 'street cred' as a 'valid' medium? In an era where 'Geek' has hit the mainstream and you can wear your Geek Badge of Honour in public.
What's that now? Two Hulk movies (two with TV series Hulk origins...and the 2nd one was the 'Green Lantern' soft start to the 'Marvel Cinematic' movie-verse?) 'Guest Star' spots in several Avengers. One of which? He gets Hulk-Busted T.K.O'd by a heap of 'Iron-Junk' and a falling building... The Hulk also, infamously gets the 'Hulk'-Hitch-Hlapped out of him by Darkseid (sorry, we meant to say 'Thanos...') and ends up with a suit of armour as a token gift wrap for 'not' being Hulk... (insult to injury?) and gets discarded as a 'guest' in a Hulk-dilute tv series where he gets Hulk-splained about 'anger' by... *(Reader's Voice. 'Ok, ok, Azrael. We GET it it. Hulk was your first Jack Kirby Universe character BIG LOVE...and 'Hulk Smash...and 'Hulk is the strongest one there is...')
Azrael's inner '8 year old' green colour fades to a more palettable olive skin... It's ok, Reader's Voice. We're back. We're calm. Xen. Everything's fine. Nothing to see here... *Puts the computer down...carefully.
