メルク社がスポンサーとなったガーダシルの臨床試験を主導し、後に負傷患者のための政府系診療所を運営したデンマーク人医師は、HPVワクチンが一部の接種者にPOTS（体位性頻脈症候群）や慢性疲労症候群のような症状を引き起こした可能性が高いと結論付けた。

メルク社に対する訴訟の証拠として提出された報告書の中でイェスパー・メルセン医師は、メルク社が安全上の警告を無視したと述べている。

デンマークは、ガーダシル関連の負傷の「劇的な増加」を治療するための診療所に資金を提供した。

メルセン氏の報告書は、ガーダシルワクチンと起立性頻脈症候群（POTS）との関連性に焦点を当てている。POTSは自律神経系に影響を与える疾患で、めまい、頻脈、疲労感、失神、起立時の認知機能障害などの症状が現れる。

メルセン氏によると、この報告書は、臨床コホート、有害事象報告、自己免疫検査などの証拠を提示しており、ガーダシルとPOTSの発症、および一部の接種者における筋痛性脳脊髄炎/慢性疲労症候群（ME/CFS）やロングCOVIDに類似した症状との間に、関連性があることを裏付けている。

メルセン氏のチームが最初にパターンに気づき始めたのは2011年のことだった。当時、HPVワクチン接種後に患者が動悸、倦怠感、視力障害、認知機能障害、胸部不快感といった同様の症状を訴え始めた。

こうした症状の頻度から、チームは体系的にデータの収集を開始した。具体的には、質問票、血液検査、自己免疫検査、ミトコンドリア機能の分析、自律神経性心血管制御の測定などを行った。

デンマーク政府はこの研究に資金を提供し、デンマークとドイツから一流の生物学者と免疫学者を招集した。彼らが発表した研究結果は両者の関連性を示唆し、さらなる研究の必要性を訴えた。

2015年までに報告件数が大幅に増加したため、デンマーク政府は「ガーダシルワクチン接種後の副作用が劇的に増加した」と表現した事態に対応し、影響を受けた患者を評価・治療するための地域センターを5か所設立した。

メルセン氏はそうしたセンターの一つを率いており、そこには845人の患者が紹介された。2016年までに、デンマーク医薬品庁は約60万人のHPVワクチン接種を受けた女性から2,300件以上の有害事象報告を記録した。

2022年に『 Journal of Autoimmunity』誌に掲載された追跡調査では、当該グループの少女や若い女性は、ワクチンとの関連が疑われる自己免疫疾患と一致する生物学的マーカーと症状を示したと結論づけた。

HPVワクチンが長期的な害を引き起こす可能性：
ガーダシルがこれらの反応を引き起こす可能性のある理由を説明するために、メルセン氏はワクチンの並外れた効力を指摘している。

ガーダシル4と9は、HPVウイルスの外殻を酷似した合成粒子を用いて強力な免疫反応を引き起こすことで効果を発揮します。この合成粒子は、免疫系が本物のウイルスを認識して攻撃するように訓練するのに十分なほど似ているが、感染を引き起こす能力はない。

このワクチンには、免疫反応をさらに強化するためのアルミニウム系アジュバントが含まれており、
他のワクチンと同様に、ガーダシルは免疫系を活性化させ、一時的な症状（倦怠感、微熱、頭痛、筋肉痛など）を引き起こす。

これは、体が「細胞危険反応」と呼ばれる状態に移行し、一時的に通常のエネルギー産生よりも防御を優先するためです。ほとんどの人は、これらの症状は1～2日以内に治まるといわれているが、人によってはそうならない場合もある。

メルセン氏によれば、こうしたケースでは、細胞のエネルギー源であるミトコンドリアが防御モードに切り替わったままになり、エネルギーではなく炎症性分子を生成してしまうのだという。

これにより、正常な炭水化物代謝が低下し、筋肉や神経組織の炎症が促進され、痛み、思考力の低下、感覚過敏などの症状が現れる。

さらに重要な点として、彼は、これらの人々の免疫系が異常なレベルの自己標的抗体を産生し始めると主張する。これらの抗体は、ウイルスと戦う代わりに、心拍数、血圧、消化などの不随意機能を司る自律神経系に干渉するタンパク質である。

メルセン氏のチームがデンマークで行った調査では、自己免疫系の副作用を報告した患者の92%で、これらの抗体の異常値が認められた。メルセン氏によると、その後、ワクチン接種後にPOTSを発症した他の患者群でも同様のパターンが確認されているという。これらのパターンは、異なる研究室で異なる方法を用いて検出された。

メルセン氏によると、この阻害作用が、ガーダシル投与を受けた患者の一部が、消化器系の問題、思考力の低下、異常な感覚過敏などの他の症状とともに、POTSを発症する理由を説明しているという。

規制当局はデータを無視した：
メルセン氏は自身の研究結果をメルク社、サノフィ社、そしてデンマーク保健当局と共有した。

メルク社も欧州医薬品庁（EMA）も、彼のチームが特定した関連性について適切な調査を行わなかった。

しかし、2015年、EMAは文献レビューと製薬会社からのデータに基づき、スウェーデンのウプサラにある世界保健機関国際医薬品監視協力センターなどが提供したデータを公然と無視して、ガーダシルと重篤な自己免疫疾患や神経系の副作用との関連性はないと宣言した。

メーセン氏は報告書の中で、HPVワクチンの安全性に関するエビデンス基盤についても、より広範な懸念を指摘している。彼はピーター・ゴッツェ博士らの研究に言及し、HPVワクチンの臨床試験では、不活性な生理食塩水プラセボではなく「活性比較薬」が使用されたという批判を発表した。

これは、ワクチン関連の副作用を隠蔽する可能性のある試験設計上の選択であり、彼はまた、ワクチン接種を受けた集団においてPOTS、ME/CFS、または関連疾患の増加が見られなかった疫学研究に重大な方法論上の問題があることを指摘し、登録に基づく研究は診断が難しく、しばしば誤ってコード化される疾患を把握するのに適していないと主張し次のように結論づけた。

I sent this letter to the Editor-in-Chief of Toxicology Reports demanding a full explanation for the removal of a published article examining vaccines and sudden infant death.

Americans have a right to know why scientific papers are removed, who made those decisions, what evidence supported them, and whether the same standards are applied consistently.

We will restore trust in public health by insisting on transparency, accountability, and open scientific inquiry—not by asking the public to accept decisions behind closed doors.
