I have been incredibly lucky that my last two jobs have been places where I can be 100% my authentic self (if and when I want). It will be one of the defining features of any job I take in the future.
At dinner with two friends yesterday, it came up that all three of us feel that we can't meaningfully show ourselves at our (STEM) jobs; at work lunches, oftentimes silence reigns, & there's never a heartfelt conversation. We despaired at the prospect of living this for 40 years.
@dave_reis@whalelang@frumioj@Carnage4Life Not to mention that “the amount of love” and “the amount of flavor” were intentionally unmeasurable metrics, meant to echo the unmeasurability of “the amount of work”.
@dave_reis@whalelang@frumioj@Carnage4Life I think you would have to change the definition of the words so much as to make them meaningless. If everything can be modeled with a Pareto distribution, then why does statistics even have other distributions? Should we get rid of the normal, the uniform, the poisson?
@whalelang@frumioj@Carnage4Life Just because it shows up in those first examples doesn’t make your last example true. Do some couples have all of the love? Do some burgers have all of the flavor? Do some doctors treat all of the patients. Of course not.
@bvilleberry @fermatslibrary In my opinion, a proof should also give you some insight into *why* a phenomenon is occurring. That’s why I find brute force computer proofs kind of disappointing.
@johnmyleswhite the time it takes for other devs to understand, maintain and work with the code. It has to include the cost of other code interfacing with it, or how easily it is reused. So, it is not a simple comparison.
@johnmyleswhite Usually the code you write will run many, many times. Sometimes in parallel across many machines. If you’re doing a true accounting you have to include all of those. However, the human cost is more than just the time it took to write the code. It has to include …
@BenjaminDanard @shauseth Sure: grade essays, price houses, detect security threats, spot cancer in MRI images, park a car. I could keep going. It’s amazing that AI can do these things approximately as well as humans. It’s profitable that it can do them at scale. But a human expert is still better.
@LauraJaneGrace He could have sung that thing in his chest voice and it would have been fine. Why is he still trying for that falsetto? He needs to find his Johnny Cash American IV sound.
@RichardMCNgo I disagree with your second statement. A simulation of a chess game is not the same thing as a chess game. There is no drama. No actor feeling emotion over the success or failure of a move.
