al-Khaṭīb al-Baghdādī (d. 462) on those who view that laymen must know the proofs for legal rulings to practice:

“It is related about some Muʿtazilīs that they would say: ‘It is not permissible for a layman to practice upon the legal opinion of a scholar until he becomes aware of the reasoning for the ruling. When the layman comes to know it, he will inquire into it and [then] practice upon it.’

This is incorrect. There’s no way a regular person can inquire into that, except after:
—(i) formally studying jurisprudence (fiqh) for many years,
—(ii) accompanying jurists for a long period of time,
—(iii) researching the methods of legal analogy (qiyās),
—(iv) knowing what validates analogy and invalidates it and
—(v) knowing which proof must have preponderance over others.

To oblige the laymen to do those things is to oblige them to do what they are not capable of and have no way to attain.”

May Allah be pleased with Imam Ramadan al-Bouti. He was an ocean in the Islamic sciences of aqidah, kalam, mantiq, fiqh and usul. He was a major authority in our time in both the Shafi'i and Ash'ari schools. He died as a martyr and this is sufficient to prove he was upon haq.
