The gospel:
1 Corinthians 15:3-4
3 For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 4 that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures...
Once again, you take John 5:29 out of context. A few verses earlier, Jesus says all who believe are saved.
24 “Very truly I tell you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not be judged but has crossed over from death to life. 25 Very truly I tell you, a time is coming and has now come when the dead will hear the voice of the Son of God and those who hear will live. 26 For as the Father has life in himself, so he has granted the Son also to have life in himself. 27 And he has given him authority to judge because he is the Son of Man.
28 “Do not be amazed at this, for a time is coming when all who are in their graves will hear his voice 29 and come out—those who have done what is good will rise to live, and those who have done what is evil will rise to be condemned. 30 By myself I can do nothing; I judge only as I hear, and my judgment is just, for I seek not to please myself but him who sent me.
We are saved by grace through faith. Thank you Jesus for the free gift of salvation. I do not work to earn it, and I do not work to keep it.
Christ works in and through me to bring my faith to completion.
Let's look at the context of the passage. Romans 10 is definitely not stating we are saved through works of faith. We are saved by faith alone in Christ. Adding anything to the finished, atoning work of Christ is blasphemous.
5 For Moses writes about the righteousness that is based on the law, that the person who does the commandments shall live by them. 6 But the righteousness based on faith says, “Do not say in your heart, ‘Who will ascend into heaven?’” (that is, to bring Christ down) 7 “or ‘Who will descend into the abyss?’” (that is, to bring Christ up from the dead). 8 But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart” (that is, the word of faith that we proclaim); 9 because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. 11 For the Scripture says, “Everyone who believes in him will not be put to shame.” 12 For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek; for the same Lord is Lord of all, bestowing his riches on all who call on him. 13 For “everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
The Bible doesn't contradict. It is the infallible word of God. Paul met with the apostles in Acts 15 and 20 and the apostles confirmed the gospel Paul was preaching.
You gotta consider the context. James was writing to already saved Jewish believers on how their faith can be profitable/ how they can live out their faith as a witness to others. He was NOT writing his letter on how to be saved/justified in the eyes of God, as his audience was already saved.
When it comes to the Bible, I have a few convictions that I am adamant about and have little to no space to change.
1.) I am unequivocally a Trinitarian. I will never be persuaded otherwise about Christ's divinity.
2.) Salvation is God's grace via faith, not works.
3.) Finally, I firmly believe that premillennialism is the
most biblically accurate eschatological view. I know that many of you want to convert me to preterism, but it will never happen. Premillennialism is the only system that agrees with a literal interpretation of God’s covenants & end-times prophecy.
I just want to let you guys know that I've decided on that. 🤗
We are all bitten by the serpent. We all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. The ONLY path to salvation is through belief in the son alone. Not works. Not merit.
Grace through faith alone.
Second question, are you implying that grace isn't free and we can earn grace through merit or works?
By definition, grace is unmerited favor. It's free, we don't earn it or deserve it. To imply in a "free gracer" is to be disingenuous.
We are saved by faith APART from works (Eph 2:8-9) and WITHOUT works (Romans 4:5). Once saved, we are a new creation (2 Cor 5:17-21) and SHOULD walk in the works Christ has prepared for us (Phil 2:13, Eph 2:10). If we don't, we will be chastised but that does NOT include a loss of salvation (Heb 12).
@wendelltalks Believe in the gospel 1 Corinthians 15:1-4, without works Ephesians 2:8-9, Romans 4:5, to be saved and sealed for eternity Ephesians 1:13, 4:30.
This is the CLAIM Catholics make. There is no verifiable source of information that can prove that oral tradition and apostolic succession was not perverted, misunderstood, or twisted in some way shape or form from circa 33 AD to the 300s AD. The Bible is the standard of God's revelation and truth and is the benchmark we should and must use to compare claims of manmade tradition.
If it lines up with Biblical teaching, sure, tradition is great. When it goes beyond the text into conjecture and grandiose claims, it needs to be rejected.
I think there is room for more grace between denominations. It is Jesus who saves, not man. Calvinists have a different view of God's sovereign than Arminians, Catholics view the Eucharist differently than Protestants, Pentecostals view the spiritual gifts differently than Baptists, etc.
If we approached the topic of unity with humility and grace, we would all probably realize the answer to most questions or objections lies in the middle of two opposing views, and less on the outer extremes.
The Bible plainly rejects what you are saying.
1 John 1:9
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Confess is the Greek word homologeó, and in context, means to admit guilt or to agree. Our salvation is not dependent upon our performance. Although we should be genuinely striving to then from sin, we will never be perfect and our flesh will win on occasion.
What happens when you forget to confess a sin? What happens when you don't realize you had a few bad thoughts the other day? Is your salvation in jeopardy?
@Bolling@TheOfficialMWB@BornAgainMissy So your salvation is dependent upon your works. This is just a fancy was of backloading work right back into the gospel after pretending we are saved by grace through faith.
1 John 3:23
They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us. But they went out, that it might become plain that they all are not of us.
Pretty clear apostates were not of the faith. When you leave the faith, do you unborn again yourself? Do you uncircumcise your heart? Do you remove the seal of the Holy Spirit and go back to being an unregenerate believer?
