The Sons of Jacob synagogue in Belleville, Canada, was sprayed with bullets last night as congregants gathered for Yom Kippur, the holiest day on the Jewish calendar.

A police officer was shot outside the synagogue while confronting the shooter. No one inside was injured. The synagogue’s president credits the heroic officer, who was hired to protect the congregation, with saving the lives of everyone gathered inside. We are praying for the officer’s recovery🙏

Jewish Canadians are emerging from Yom Kippur, the holiest day of the Jewish calendar, to the horrifying images of gunfire outside Sons of Jacob Synagogue in Belleville, where members of the Jewish community had gathered to pray.

We are profoundly grateful to Constable Jeff Smith who acted heroically in risking is own life to protect his fellow Canadians. Our entire community prays for his full and speedy recovery.

The investigation into last night's events is ongoing, but one fact requires no investigation: Jewish Canadians should not need armed police outside their synagogues simply to pray safely.

Canadians cannot accept a future, as now exists in Europe, in which synagogues and Jewish schools can only operate safely behind permanent armed police and soldiers with machine guns.

With Parliament returning this week, governments at every level must turn their attention to the domestic situation and the growing threat of extremist violence here in Canada.

We are calling for immediate action:

· Leaders need to speak clearly: antizionism is driving violence against Canadians. The demonization of Israel offers a green light for extremists who target the Jewish community. This includes when governments single Israel out or hold it to a double-standard. Canadian security officials have repeatedly warned about the potential for international conflicts and grievances to be exploited by extremists at home. Governments must take that threat seriously and confront antisemitism consistently, including when it is expressed through double standards in foreign policy, and the demonization or delegitimization of Israel.

· Convene federal, provincial and territorial attorneys general and public safety ministers to prioritize enforcement, disrupt extremist networks, strengthen intelligence coordination, and ensure those who threaten or perpetrate violence are held accountable.

· We need streamlined processes that enable Jewish institutions to rapidly request and secure paid-duty police officers during periods of elevated attendance and risk. The framework should allow for prioritized and expedited approvals, a designated point of contact within participating police services, and access to sufficient federal funding to help offset paid-duty policing costs.

· Confront extremist ideologies, organizations and foreign state actors that promote, finance, facilitate or direct violence in Canada, including the documented threat posed by the Iranian regime and its proxies.

No more thoughts and prayers. The clock is ticking and our leaders must act before lives are lost.

BREAKING: Jews gathered inside a synagogue in Canada to pray on Yom Kippur when gunfire erupted outside.

A gunman armed with a shotgun fired 23 bullets at a police officer stationed near the synagogue, triggering a shootout. The officer was seriously wounded and remains in stable condition, while the gunman was shot and hospitalized with life-threatening injuries.

Jews should never have to fear for their lives while praying in a synagogue. Pray for the brave officer’s recovery. 🙏✡️

To all, especially those who consider themselves “pro-Palestine” and who liked the Israeli-made documentary film NAZA about the Israeli military’s use of novel AI and technological means for aggressive targeting during the war in Gaza: would you be equally enthusiastic about a Palestinian-made documentary showcasing how Hamas engaged in asymmetric warfare since October 7? Would you give a lengthy standing ovation to a documentary that detailed how the terror group abused civilian infrastructure to hide weaponry, fire projectiles, carry out ambushes, conduct hit-and-run attacks, divert aid, steal supplies, torture Gazans, hide inside schools and hospitals, and ignore Palestinian civilians’ pleas for it not to use their homes, properties, shelter areas, or humanitarian zones for militant activities? Given the danger to the lives of Palestinians who speak openly to cameras, would you be just as embracing, believing, and accepting of Palestinian voices in Gaza who would offer anonymous testimonies for this documentary, given that you’re clearly comfortable with members of the Israeli military offering anonymous testimonies and details about their army’s behavior?

To be clear, this is not a 1-to-1 comparison between the subject of NAZA and this theoretical documentary about Hamas. The point is that I strongly believe there is a greater willingness to believe Israelis when they speak out against their military and government. Could it be that when and if Palestinians do the same about the fascist terrorist group that has ruled them with an iron fist for two decades and led them to mass devastation, they aren’t actually heard? Could it be that, in fact, Israeli voices serve the narrative in ways that are more palatable to "pro-Palestine" Western audiences than actual Palestinians opposed to or living under Hamas?

If you genuinely want to understand how Hamas’s so‑called “resistance” guaranteed Gaza’s devastation after October 7, I will personally be leading an international effort to assemble the talent and resources needed to produce a documentary rooted in Palestinian self‑interest rather than Israeli state narratives and tell the hidden and untold truths regarding this terror “resistance” group.
