Kashi Vishwanath: destroyed, moved, and rebuilt

The shrine now called Kashi Vishwanath is not one temple on one plot. It is a succession of Vishveshvara temples, rebuilt nearby each time the last one was razed.

In 12th century, Qutb-ud-din Aibak’s army sacked Kashi. The older Vishveshvara temple, later remembered as Adi Vishveshwar, stood on the hilltop where Bibi Razia’s mosque was raised during Razia Sultana’s reign.

By the mid-13th century a new temple rose in the Avimukteshvara precinct beside Gyanvapi. The Jaunpur Sharqis damaged it in the mid-1400s. Sikandar Lodi finished the demolition in the 1490s.

In 1585, Narayana Bhatta rebuilt Vishveshvara at Gyanvapi. Aurangzeb ordered that temple destroyed in 1669; the Gyanvapi Mosque was built on its plinth, keeping the old western wall.

The temple standing today was built immediately south of that mosque by Ahilyabai Holkar in 1777–1780. Ranjit Singh later sheathed its shikhara in gold.
