New paper out! 🐋 We show that southern right whale mothers and calves leave calving grounds once calves hit ~8m, and that bigger, fatter mums help calves get there sooner: https://t.co/eDJPRmwMn5

Off the coast of California, likely common dolphin or possible rough tooth. Hard to positive ID from photos/state of decomposition.
Ichthyosaur would of been super cool though 😉
Here are a couple of amazing photos of these magnificent beasts, taken by @MklJMoore, @JohnWDurban, Holly Fearnbach of @SR3Sealife and Carolyn Miller of @WHOI. Authorized under NMFS permits 17355 & 21371. I sure hope we can keep these whales around.
Out today in @CurrentBiology we found that critically endangered North Atlantic right whales are not only declining in abundance, but also in size. A whale born today is expected to reach a maximum size about 1m shorter than a whale born in 1981. https://t.co/YC2OStzGyt
@DominicJHare This is so messed up, hope this means a new door opens for you. Almost pulled the trigger on a PhD to go down the academia/research path but many similar stories I’ve heard and witnessed have caused me to shy away from it. I won’t say it will never happen, but it’s not enticing.
@MaxCRoser Hi @MaxCRoser thanks for all the work you and the team at @OurWorldInData are doing during this! Curious question, is there any clarity being reported in the data how many positive cases are asymptomatic vs symptomatic? That would be interesting to see.
UPDATE: Zoos Victoria vet, Dr Leanne Wicker, is currently at Mallacoota with @DELWP_Vic. We’ve had an overwhelming amount of support ❤, but we’re in for the long haul. Please donate here, every dollar counts: https://t.co/j7oKuCa3Bf #vicfires
Bubbles!
Epic tag + drone footage of how SE Alaska humpbacks use bubble nets to prey on krill. Great collaboration between @MMRP_UH,@lbejder, @AlaskaWhale Foundation, @GoldbogenLab, @WhaleGough, Ari FriedLaender
Three southern right whale mother-calf pairs photographed on the same day on three different breeding grounds to measure health. Thanks to all my fantastic collaborators. Photo by: Nico Lewin, Angus Henderson, Els Vermeulen @AIAS_dk@MurdochUni@ICB_Argentina @MRIWhaleUnit
A great new PhD opportunity with @ceal_uq @BecDunlop at Moreton Bay Research Station #UQ for Aus or NZ students. Understanding natural & anthropogenic influences on the population health of the east Australian humpback whale population. https://t.co/HYkAaJThtp
New paper out @SciReports! We used laser photogrammetry to estimate body length of bottlenose dolphins (T. aduncus) from geographically-separated regions. Dolphins in SW Australia >35 cm longer than dolphins in Shark Bay.
