Hi, I’m an American living in Japan. This is my on-the-ground report of Japan’s corona situation—what the rest of the world can learn from Japan, and what Japan needs to still be concerned about.
@4vmrv For one thing, doors open on different sides depending on the station, so having two rows in the middle blocking the ability to get from one side to the other is a nonstarter.
In the 90s I used to arrive every day at the then modest-sized Shibuya Station blissfully unaware that there was a massive, massive expansion project underway right beneath my feet.
@gaiaslastlaugh There are many highly fluent non-native speakers of Japanese. The number of these that can also read & write at an equivalent level is much, much smaller.
@XenoftheRath It's worth noting that this same ex-sumo wrester, who was a top-division rikishi when he was active, was soundly defeated by an actual heavyweight MMA fighter not long ago.
@z1papq There are many excellent English-native Japanese speakers out there. Like learning any other language, just takes focus, dedication, and lots of practice. The spoken language is actually quite straightforward. The written language is another story.
