Sharing insights on how to navigate toxic relationships & toxic church from a biblical, practical, and spiritual perspective. #toxicityisnotyourdestiny
Hey Mike, I love your content. Would you consider doing a video responding to Todd Phillips? He’s a former megachurch pastor with extensive theological education who went through nearly a decade of deconstruction and ultimately left Christianity. He’s now publicly challenging Christians to wrestle with the objections that led him away from the faith. I’d really value hearing a biblical scholar like you seriously engage with his arguments.

One of the signs of a spiritually manipulative or abusive church culture is when adults are shepherded to be in a continual state of adolescence. “Trust the grown ups”. “Submit to spiritual mothers and fathers”. “Obey your leaders even when you don’t understand”
These are not teachings of righteousness, but of idolatry.
Adults have a primary personal relationship with God through His Word and the Holy Spirit and a secondary relationship with brothers and sisters in Christ INCLUDING leaders.
Children have a primary relationship with mommy and daddy and a secondary relationship with God.
A parent’s entire moral responsibility to their children is facilitating the transition from Childhood to Adulthood. John the Baptist put it this way “He must increase and I must decrease.” If your pastor or church leadership is not teaching and preparing you to live independently submitted to Christ alone they are failing you. And if they teach independence is sin, you are in a cult.
I don’t think we really understand the level of deception that occurs in people who abuse. We think that if they cry and say they are sorry, that’s a good thing. But it doesn’t touch the practice of deception that runs their lives and that runs their organizations.
