My 5 year old artistic son woke up unusually early this morning and immediately started telling me about a monster he had seen in his dream.

He was so serious, passionately describing every little detail, trying to make me understand exactly what this thing looked like. Meanwhile, I was sitting there completely lost because, in his little mind, the monster was crystal clear, but I just couldn’t picture it.

So I said, “Okay, come and show me what you mean.” I handed him my sketchbook app and asked him to sketch this mysterious creature he was describing.

This is what my 5-year-old came up with!

The fact that he woke up with the memory of this monster and could actually translate what he saw in his dream into a drawing is sending me! 😂😭

I do not condone foreigners watering down our music and culture, especially Afrobeats. This is exactly why I understand Akademiks’ argument about why Burna Boy may never perform at the Super Bowl.

But on the other hand, he deserves the criticism. This is what happens when you constantly accept backyard gigs, take free shows for “exposure,” and prioritize flexing on your fellow Nigerian artists instead of demanding the respect our music deserves on the global stage.

This is exactly what Wizkid has been fighting for over the years, but somehow, whenever he pushes for that standard, people water down his efforts and label it as pride.

The truth is.... A lot of American music has deep roots in African music when you actually go back and study the history. Afrobeats deserves to be presented at the highest level, and our artists should be demanding that standard instead of settling for whatever opportunity comes their way. 🤝
