Dr. Derek Muller, the founder of Vertiasium, went from lecturing 400 students up to 250 million just by using YouTube as a teaching device. Social media has transformed our lives because it keeps us connected in a way we could never be before. #EDTC618S20@SamanthaBahna
@TashaLMurphy@SamanthaBahna@SamanthaBahna#EDTC618S20 I like that you pointed out the time frame (anywhere and anytime). Anywhere is quite poignant when it comes to Social Media. It can almost be treated like a classroom, on the go, sort of like a mobile classroom.
@seatermedia@SamanthaBahna@SamanthaBahna#EDTC618S20 I also see Social Media as a nontraditional application to teaching and learning. Although it may not be traditional in its methods, the messages you care to convey can still be addressed and applied to whomever they were intended.
@DigirolamoKelly@SamanthaBahna@SamanthaBahna#EDTC618S20 Globally is the key word. You hit the nail on the head. We can spread messages from America to beyond and reach people in other countries. This is simply not possible by just using the traditional classroom setting.
@seatermedia@marykha83061290@SamanthaBahna@SamanthaBahna I agree. That is one of the reasons why I wanted to go to school online. My work schedule is very hectic and keeps me quite busy. Online classes allow me more flexibility & gives me a choice as to when I can focus on my studies when I have spare time from work.
@kristawelz A5: As the text pointed out, children need to see themselves reflected within a book because it helps to build bridges across various cultures. When a child's background and culture is absent, that bridge cannot be built. Also, the child will feel lost and unimportant. #NJLibchat
@A_Novel_Idea96@kristawelz Sounds like something I would like to look into. Thank you for the suggestion. I used to write poetry when I was young. I wish there was a platform like this available.
@marissalynnj@kristawelz I've seen that movie. I didn't know it was related to the former rapper, Tupac Shakur. I also didn't know it was an acronym for T.H.U.G. Very interesting. I'd like to read it myself.
@kristawelz A3 You have to research the background of the author and the illustrator of the text. Look for websites. There were past authors who held little knowledge of the people they were writing about. This brought about misconceptions and stereotypes about the culture. #NJLibchat
@KBrenner7@kristawelz I do think that students need to see that different doesn't mean bad. They also need to learn that just because someone looks the same as they do does not mean they have to react and act in the same fashion. For we are all human at the end of the day.
@kristawelz A1 When students are exposed to various cultures, they can be aware of other cultures and see the points of views of people who may differ from themselves.

@kristawelz A2 Students can break away from stereotypes they may have of other cultures if they can learn about them in a more realistic fashion. It also helps them to see how much in common they have with people who they may appear to be different from. #NJLibchat
