Question: In a joint article for the Daily Telegraph, UK Foreign Secretary David Cameron and French Foreign Minister Stephane Sejourne called on NATO allies to unite their efforts in order to "defeat Russia". It was noted that Ukraine's defeat cannot be allowed - "if Ukraine loses,we all lose". How would you comment on these statements?

Answer: Lofty declarations by David Cameron and Stephane Sejourne regarding the Franco-British "Entente", in fact, clearly reflect their opportunistic nature. They are an expression not of the inherent value of the bilateral partnership for London and Paris, but of their combined ingratiation aimed at U.S. legislators, whom European allies are trying to persuade to continue throwing money into the furnace of the Ukraine crisis.

The central notion of the British-French proclamation - that Ukraine's defeat will also be the West's loss - is puzzling. Neither the article nor other statements by these officials explain what exactly this loss will entail. And this is understandable. After all, it would be difficult to explain to ordinary readers why they should be worried about peace finally coming to Europe and their taxes no longer being wasted on keeping the corrupt Zelensky regime afloat as well as the senseless weapons supplies to the Kiev junta, which is expending them ineffectively on the battlefield.

Usually, this narrative is followed up by rants about "values of the free world" that Russia is allegedly interfering with, and some "battle for democracy". But these sermons have started to ring hollow. Europeans do not seem to be taken aback by habitual scaremongering about the threat of a Russian invasion, the implausibility of which has long become the butt of jokes.

Reading between the lines, it is crystal clear who the real “losers” would be. Not Western countries, but rather their leaders, who have made a plainly erroneous bet on supporting Kiev when it unleashed a war against Russians in its own country and against Russia itself. They are the ones having real difficulties in extricating themselves from this situation without loss of face. Hence their desperate attempts to salvage their reputation. Meanwhile, drawing on "best practices" of former Prime Minister Boris Johnson, they are also striving to earn extra media points before being consigned to political oblivion.

Unsurprisingly, both ministers have shied away from pointing out the terrorist nature of the Kiev regime in their article. They are again trying to attribute to ISIS the responsibility for the dreadful terrorist attack in the "Crocus City Hall". They are doing their utmost to ignore the renewed shelling of the Zaporozhskaya Nuclear Power Plant, which is fraught with truly catastrophic consequences for all European countries, including the UK and France.

I should add that, according to prevailing estimates, David Cameron and his fellow party members have only a few months left to serve in their current capacity. Parliamentary elections are due to take place in autumn, in which the ruling Conservatives are predicted to suffer a crushing defeat. Apparently, by simply doing more of the same in the Ukraine crisis, Tory leaders intend to refrain from realistically assessing the situation, so as to toss this "hot potato" into the hands of the future government as a source of permanent budget expenditures and reputational costs. Whether their successors will pick up the tab is, of course, up to them.
