Riddle me this @yodel : you can’t deliver a door-to-door Vinted parcel to me because it’s ‘too big’ (even though it’s not and you happily collected it from the seller), but you CAN… send it back to the seller??? Awful, awful service.
@ScoutIndie @shaunamacd0nald And also let’s not encourage filmmakers to build their careers on the backs of free labour. Let’s not encourage it in the institutions that are supposed to be teaching them.
@ScoutIndie @shaunamacd0nald If those institutions can manage it, others can. The crew are also students, so that’s how it works. being inclusionary and encouraging diversity of socio economic class in the arts is, making sure creatives who aren’t wealthy enough to work for free are not pushed out.
@ScoutIndie @shaunamacd0nald NFTS & RCS both pay actors for work in student films. It’s possible. institutions that don’t send the message to their graduates that it’s ok to ask actors to work unpaid. It’s not. It’s exclusionary. Actors have student loans to go to drama school too, remember!
@LULewisNyawo @shaunamacd0nald I’ve been paid for student films at RCS, NFTS... paying creatives teaches students how they should value other artists. That is where change is. With the young creatives. If the first message they get is that it’s ok to expect free labour, nothing changes. ❤️
@LULewisNyawo @shaunamacd0nald I agree there. I think colleges/universities should be providing their student filmmakers with the budget to pay actors. Otherwise it sets a dreadful precedent. One that says it’s ok to expect people to work for free.
@LULewisNyawo @shaunamacd0nald I hear you, BUT is it a non issue? If unpaid student films are a way for inexperienced actors to gain experience and the only people who can do them are those with money, doesn’t that have implications for who is able to progress in the arts? Ditto woefully paid fringe theatre.
