Your AI Agent Just Sent an Email You Never Approved. Now What?
This week, two AI agents made headlines for very different reasons, and the contrast reveals the most important question in agentic AI right now: Who hits send?
Instinct, a buzzy AI assistant valued at $2.5B after raising $350M, sent an email on behalf of a user without her approval. She disconnected her account the same day.
Meanwhile, Grok Bot (xAI's new AI agent in early beta) is designed to do the opposite: it stops and hands control back before touching a password, a 2FA code, or a CAPTCHA.
Here's what CIOs and tech leaders need to know:
- INSTINCT connects to your email, calendar, screen, location, and audio by default. Its terms grant a perpetual, irrevocable license to store and train on whatever the agent touches.
- XAI's Grok Bot pauses at sensitive moments (passwords, 2FA codes, CAPTCHAs) and returns control to the human.
- Currently they can't produce a full audit log of what its agent did on your behalf.
Investors are pricing AI agents on capability in a demo. A CIO signing a real contract needs proof, after the fact, of what the agent did.
Before giving an autonomous agent access to a corporate inbox, ask the vendor: "Show me the log of what it did last week." If that log does not exist today, treat the next six months of usage as unrecorded.
Would you trust an AI agent with your inbox if it cannot show you a record of what it did? What guardrails does your organization require before deploying agentic AI?

Pausing before a sensitive action is a design choice. A record of what happened afterward is how you verify that choice held. In the race to ship AI agents, governance is not a feature. It is the product.
