मनुस्मृति। जब मुद्दाविहीन हो जाओ तो मनुस्मृति को गाली दे दो। जब स्वयं को आधुनिक व बुद्धिजीवी दिखाना हो तो मनुस्मृति को गाली दे दो। जब वोक दिखना हो तो मनुस्मृति को गाली दे दो।

मनुस्मृति कहती है कि कन्या का अविवाहित रह जाना बेहतर है, लेकिन उसका विवाह किसी गुणहीन पुरुष से नहीं किया जाना चाहिए। नारी-सशक्तिकरण के लिए इससे बेहतर समझ रखते हैं आप? मनुस्मृति कहती है कि शारीरिक परिपक्वता के बाद निर्धारित अवधि तक प्रतीक्षा करने के बाद ही लड़की का विवाह हो, उस समय के हिसाब से 17 वर्ष तक। बाल-विवाह के विर��द्ध इससे बेहतर कोई प्रमाण है आपके पास?

मनुस्मृति कहती है - विन्देत सदृशं पतिम्। कन्या अपने योग्य पति का स्वयं वरण करे। यदि अभिभावक विवाह नहीं कराते और कन्या स्वयं पति चुन ले, तो न कन्या किसी पाप या अपराध की भागी होती है, और न वह पुरुष जिसे वह चुनती है। स्वेच्छा और कंसेंट को इससे बेहतर परिभाषित कर सकते हैं आप?

पुत्रेण दुहिता समा। पुत्री पुत्र के समान है। स्त्री-पुरुष समानता के लिए मनुस्मृति स��� बेहतर कुछ ला सकते हैं आप? क़ुरान या बाइबिल लेकर आइए, देख लीजिए। स्वयं डॉ आंबेडकर ने बुढ़ापे में मनुस्मृति का लोहा माना है, उत्तराधिकार वाले विषय को लेकर। मनुस्मृति माता की निजी संपत्ति को अलग से मान्यता देती है और उसे अविवाहित पुत्री का भाग बताती है। परिवार में महिलाओं को सशक्त रखने के लिए इससे बेहतर कोई व्यवस्था अबतक लेकर आए आप?

ब��, दबाव या जबरन नियंत्रण से स्त्रियों को सुरक्षित नहीं रखा जा सकता। विश्वसनीय पुरुष भी उन्हें क़ैद नहीं रख सकते। आत्मानमात्मना यास्तु रक्षेयुस्ताः सुरक्षिताः। मतलब, जो स्त्री अपने विवेक से अपनी रक्षा करती हैं, वही सुरक्षित है। बाहरी निगरानी से ऊपर विवेक को रखा गया है। स्त्रियों को विवेकी माना गया है। इससे अधिक सम्मान देते हैं आप? आपने तो अपनी बहन तक को चुनावी राजनीति में खुद के 2 दशक बाद उतारा।

धन के देखभाल एवं प्रबंधन के लिए मनुस्मृति ने स्त्रियों पर विश्वास जताया है। राजा को मनुस्मृति आदेश देती है कि ऐसी स्त्रियों की रक्षा करे जिनके पति बाहर हैं, जिनका परिवार प्रभावशाली नहीं है, जो बीमार हैं या जिनके पति या पुत्र नहीं हैं। अगर कोई संबंधी भी किसी स्त्री की संपत्ति हड़पता है तो उसे चोर मानकर दंड देने को कहा है। इससे अधिक परवाह है आपको स्त्रियों की?

पति को आदेश है कि ��ाहर जाने से पहले पत्नी की आजीविका की व्यवस्था करके जाए। अब ये मत कहिएगा कि पत्नी ख़ुद नहीं कर सकती क्या। जीवेच्छिल्पैरगर्हितैः। आगे ये भी लिखा है कि पति न करे तो स्त्री ख़ुद सम्मानजनक कार्यों के जरिए कमाए। आत्मनिर्भरता के लिए इससे बेहतर नियम बना लेंगे आप?

तस्मात्साधारणो धर्मः श्रुतौ पत्न्या सहोदितः। धार्मिक कार्य पति-पत्नी साथ मिलकर करें। पत्नी के बिना कोई अनुष्ठान पूरा नहीं होता है। ���मारे यहाँ पत्नी को बेगम नहीं, अर्धांगिनी कहा गया है। यहीं से निकला है 'आधी आबादी'। पूरे पचास प्रतिशत - उतना ही, जितना पुरुष का हिस्सा। पचास-पचास। इससे अधिक सटीक तरीके से बराबरी का सन्देश दे सकते हैं आप? अन्योन्यस्य। एक-दूसरे के प्रति। वैवाहिक जीवन में भी दोनों की ज़िम्मेदारियाँ हैं। मनुस्मृति कहती है कि न स्त्री और न ही पुरुष वैवाहिक मर्यादा का उल्लंघन करे। इसमें क्या जोड़ देंगे आप क्रांतिकारी कहलाने के लिए? कुछ बाक़ी है क्या? मनुस्मृति कहती है कि नियम दोनों पर हैं।

मनुस्मृति ने स्त्री को महाभागाः (सौभाग्यशालिनी और सौभाग्य लाने वाली) कहा। मनुस्मृति ने स्त्री को पूजार्हाः (सम्मान की अधिकारी) कहा। मनुस्मृति ने स्त्री को गृहदीप्तयः (घर को प्रकाशित और प्रसन्न रखने वाली) कहा। परिवार के सुख का आधार कहा। गृह���्थ-जीवन का प्रत्यक्ष आधार कहा।

अब जिसने परिवार नामक संस्था को ख़त्म करने का लक्ष्य ले रखा हो, उसे ये सब बुरा लगेगा ही। वो पूछेगा कि स्त्री परिवार के सुख के लिए तिनका भी क्यों हिलाए। वो ये नहीं पूछेगा कि मनुस्मृति ने पुरुष को भी स्त्री के भरण-पोषण की ज़िम्मेदारी उठाने को क्यों कहा है।

यत्र नार्यस्तु पूज्यन्ते… रटा-रटाया है, इसीलिए इसे नहीं गिनाया। सबको पता है। इसी प्रसङ्ग में ये भी लिखा है ��ि जिस घर में स्त्री दुःखी रहती है वह परिवार शीघ्र नष्ट होता है। यानी, ��रिवार की स्थिति का पैमाना यह तय कर दिया गया है कि उसमें महिलाओं को प्रसन्न रखा जा रहा है या नहीं।

लेकिन नहीं, गाली तो केवल मनुस्मृति को ही पड़ेगी। क़ुरान और बाइबिल का नाम नहीं लिया जाएगा। राहुल गाँधी आज 'स्त्रीवादी' बने हैं, काश मनुस्मृति पढ़ लिया होता कम से कम। पढ़ा तो हमने भी नहीं है, इसीलिए जो कहा जाता है मान लेते हैं। सफाई देने लगते हैं कि ये उस समय की व्यवस्था थी।

मनुस्मृति से अधिक फेमिनि���्म और कहीं नहीं है। फ़िलहाल इस इकोसिस्टम के लिए तो फेमिनिज्म सिर्फ़ अश्लीलता और अंग-प्रदर्शन ही है।

I was just in Mumbai, and I have to give them credit for the progress they’re making on infrastructure. The new Aqua Line metro is phenomenal. But the amount of work India still has to do on basic cleanliness and sanitation and it is hard to understand until you see it yourself. Would love for more westerners to go just to understand how wealthy they are, but that's a different point.

Mumbai is completely surrounded by water, yet there are almost no places where people can actually enjoy the water. The beaches are filled with trash, the water is badly contaminated, and almost nobody swims, even when it’s brutally hot outside. Walking on the beach is just mud and trash meeting filthy water on the horizon.

There are much poorer places around the world where people can still use the beaches. This is not just about money. India has gone decades without adequate trash collection, sewage treatment, or enforcement for a population of more than a billion people. At this point, the scale of the problem feels almost impossible, and the oceans around the world are paying the price for Indias garbage output as well.

I like the direction Modi is taking the country, but India needs to treat cleanup like a national emergency. Stop with the small campaigns and organize a full scale blitz.

Offer unemployed people paid work picking up trash, clearing drains and waterways, cleaning beaches, and maintaining public spaces. Give them proper equipment and supervision. Then build the collection and waste processing systems needed to stop everything from becoming filthy again a week later.

India has shown that it can build metros, airports, highways, and digital infrastructure. Clean streets and usable water should be treated as infrastructure too.

Mumbai should have one of the greatest waterfronts in the world. Instead, it's has basically an irrelevant feature of the city and feels surrendered to sewage and garbage.

The British put her in jail several times.

Then India became free, and an Indian government put her in jail again, and fined her, for refusing to give up her mother tongue.

She died in a poor ashram, living on a freedom fighter's pension.

Her name was Labanya Prabha Ghosh.

She was born on 14th August 1897. She never went to school. Her father taught her at home. At the age of 11, in 1908, she was married to Atul Chandra Ghosh, a lawyer who later gave up his practice for the freedom movement.

Their home in Purulia, an ashram called Shilpashram, became the centre of the freedom struggle in the Manbhum region. Subhas Chandra Bose came there. Chittaranjan Das came there. Gandhi visited it.

In 1926 she was elected to the District Congress Committee from Manbhum.

In 1930, when Gandhi began the Salt Satyagraha, she organised the marches in her own district.

In 1941 she offered individual satyagraha and was arrested. In 1942, during Quit India, she went to jail again. In 1945 she organised a flag satyagraha at Konapara.

Then came 1947, and the part almost nobody talks about.

Manbhum, where she lived, was not in Bengal. It was in Bihar. After independence the Bihar government moved to make Hindi compulsory there, over Bengali, which was the language of the people of that district.

She led the movement against it. It was called the Bhasha Andolan.

For that, the government of independent India jailed her, more than once, and fined her.

She did not stop. The movement went on for years, and it worked. In 1956 Purulia was separated from Bihar and joined West Bengal, and the people there kept their language.

In 1957 she was elected to the West Bengal assembly from Purulia.

After her husband died she took over editing their newspaper, Mukti, and ran Shilpashram herself.

She lived to be nearly 106. She died on 11th April 2003.

For the last part of her life she lived in that ashram in poverty. Her only income was the pension the state pays to freedom fighters.

The people of Purulia called her Manbhum Janani, the mother of Manbhum.

Tomorrow the country will hoist the flag. She was born on the day before Independence Day, and she spent her life on both sides of it, fighting the British first and then her own government, for the same thing.
