सन 1680 में औरंगजेब को समझ आ चुका था कि शिवाजी को रोकने उसे स्वयं ही दक्खन जाना होगा। पांच लाख की विशाल फौज लेकर वह दक्खन की ओर निकला और उसके वहां पहुंचने के पहले ही छत्रपति की मृत्यु हो गई।
औरंगजेब को लगा अब तो मराठों को पराजित करना अत्यंत आसान होगा।
परन्तु छत्रपति सम्भाजी ने 1689 तक उसे जीतने नहीं दिया। अपने सगे साले की दगाबाजी की वजह से छत्रपति सम्भाजी पकड़े गए और औरंगजेब ने अत्यन्त क्रूर और वीभत्स तरीके से उनकी हत्या करवा दी।
