#ThisWeekinHistory After conferring with Congress in Philadelphia about the defense of New York, George Washington turned his attention to the future of American government.
Writing to his brother Jack in Virginia, Washington reflected on the immense responsibility of constitution-making, reflecting, “Every man should consider that he is lending his aid to frame a constitution which is to render millions happy or miserable.”

While military strategy dominated the proceedings, another historic development unfolded: The Virginia delegation formally advanced Richard Henry Lee’s resolution declaring “that these United Colonies are, and of right ought to be, free and independent states.”

At the same time, a request arrived for Washington to travel to Philadelphia to meet with Congress to discuss the war effort—an important reminder that civilian authority still guided the American army.

The Haudenosaunee faced a difficult choice. Long connected to the British through trade and diplomacy, they had also learned that the British had been driven from Boston and hoped to avoid being drawn into the widening conflict.
