Many readers of 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐏𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐓𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞 have noticed something woven just beneath the surface.

The ancient Maya and Aztec had a word for people bound to certain paths and powers: 𝗪𝗮𝘆, or 𝗡𝗮𝗵𝘂𝗮𝗹.

The shape of your nature.
The lens you see the world through.
The role you are here to play.

For example:

“Invoking two talismans together awakens what should stay asleep,” Ah Ceel warned.
Hunac tried to mimic his father’s obsidian calm.
“At my first ceremony, the very shadows tried to kill me.”

Ah Ceel’s 𝘕𝘢𝘩𝘶𝘢𝘭 is Obsidian.

A volcanic glass forged in an instant by fire and violence. To the Maya, obsidian was sacred, believed to hold power of its own. It was used for ritual blades, mirrors, and divination.

Cool, right?

𝘕𝘢𝘩𝘶𝘢𝘭𝘦𝘴 are not just background detail. I built them into the mythology of the book itself.
