Sounds like a fortune until you look at what South African football actually makes on a single Saturday.

SuperSport's broadcast deal with the league has been worth over R2 billion across a five year cycle. That works out to roughly R400 million a year, just from TV rights.

Spread that across a roughly 240 match season and you land on more than R1.6 million generated per match, before sponsorship, gate takings or merchandise even come into it.
R70k a match to operate VAR is under 5% of that.

Here's the actual problem. That broadcast money sits with the PSL and its clubs. SAFA, the body actually responsible for referees and the VAR rollout, runs on a completely different budget. Government has already handed over R20 million toward setup costs, and full installation still needs at least R60 million more.

So yes, SAFA on its own might genuinely not have that kind of money.

South African football, as a whole, clearly does.

This was never about affordability. It's about who's willing to write the cheque.

Lephalale police are requesting public assistance in tracing a 37-year-old female, Cynthia Kgwete believed to be able to assist in solving a fraud case.

It is alleged that on Monday, 02 February 2026, Nedbank opened a fraud case at Lephalale police station for investigation.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspect allegedly posed as a client and applied for vehicle finance to purchase a Ford Ranger Double Cab.

During the application process, the suspect submitted a false documentation and further misrepresented her employment and income details to secure approval from the bank.

The application was approved, and the bakkie was released to the suspect.

It was also later discovered that a tracking device fitted to the vehicle was removed shortly after it left the dealership.

No instalments were paid to the bank and upon further investigation, the bank discovered it had been defrauded by the 37-year-old and reported the matter to the police.

A case of fraud was registered, and investigations revealed that the suspect provided a false working address and residential address in Gauteng Province.

A warrant of arrest was issued and police are appealing to anyone with information about the whereabouts of the suspect as appearing on the photo, to urgently contact the Investigating Officer Sergeant Simon Tjatjie Kekana on 078 472 0505, Crime Stop number 08600 10111, nearest police station or may share information on MySAPS App.

Police investigations are continuing.
