You won’t find a better example of American exceptionalism in technology today than autonomous vehicles. In medicine when a treatment shows this magnitude of benefit, we change what we do. Thanks @TheoJaffee and @sofiapuccini for having @EricTopol and I on.
I recently returned from an extraordinary trip across China, alongside Clifford Friedman, where we visited 5 cities in 4 days exploring the future of healthcare, technology, infrastructure, and innovation. From Shanghai to Chongqing and Sichuan Province, what stood out most was the sheer scale, speed, and ambition of what is being built.
We toured intelligent hospitals integrating AI directly into clinical workflows, robotics platforms transforming surgery and hospital operations, advanced biochip and diagnostics companies, automated supply chain systems, translational medicine hubs, and entire innovation districts dedicated almost entirely to health tech. Some felt less like office parks and more like mini cities built around healthcare innovation.
What became clear very quickly was the emphasis on implementation. Not just ideas or pilots, but deployment at scale. Entire ecosystems aligning hospitals, research, AI, manufacturing, infrastructure, and government strategy toward execution.
Chongqing was especially remarkable. A metropolitan region of roughly 32 million people and one of the largest urban centers in the world, yet the infrastructure, transportation systems, and organization were incredibly advanced. Shanghai was equally stunning, with innovation corridors that rival anywhere globally.
One of the most interesting themes throughout the trip was the emphasis on mental health. Multiple cities highlighted major investments in dedicated mental health hospitals and behavioral health infrastructure, while technology companies showcased AI and biomarker driven approaches aimed at identifying depression risk earlier and improving access to support.
There was also a visible culture of urgency and forward momentum. Many teams openly discussed 6 day work weeks and a belief that leadership in healthcare and technology will come from speed, execution, and long term strategic investment.
The future of healthcare innovation will not be built by one country alone. It will require global collaboration across medicine, public health, AI, diagnostics, robotics, and implementation science. Seeing firsthand what is being built across China was eye opening, humbling, and inspiring.
The person who built Claude Code just showed exactly how to use it.

This single session is worth more than any $1000 course.
FDA approved @EliLillyandCo Foundayo: oral GLP-1, any time of day, no food/water restrictions, $149/month self-pay.
Small molecule, not peptide = cheaper to make, harder to compound.
Lilly CEO: fewer than 10% of eligible patients are on a GLP-1. At $149/month with no needles, that number is going up fast

Cleveland Clinic, 122,007 adults: lowest VO2 max group had 4x the mortality of the highest.
Bigger gap than smokers vs non-smokers. Bigger than diabetes vs no diabetes. Bigger than end-stage renal disease vs none.
Almost no doctor measures it. Apple Watch does.

I see @SecKennedy was able to attend Charlie Kirk’s memorial. It’s unfortunate the Secretary of HHS was not able to attend the funeral of Officer David Rose who was killed in the senseless attack on the CDC, one of the agencies within @hhs.
"Political violence is like a lightning bolt: sudden, surprising, seemingly random, yet always emerging from a local weather system. Do not forget that we all make the weather." Important, researched, & thoughtful read from @DKThomp
Over the next 15 months, we can expect a coordinated campaign — backed by the full power of the executive branch — to undermine confidence in our election system. Here’s what to expect, and how key actors can be ready to respond: https://t.co/qftmMhBigX
Deeply saddened by the passing of Dr. Gregorio A. Sicard, a true pioneer in vascular surgery. I had the immense privilege of being trained by him at WashU—his wisdom, dedication, and passion shaped my career and countless others. His legacy lives on in the lives he saved and the surgeons he inspired.
It is with a heavy heart we announce the passing of Dr. Gregorio Sicard. A man, larger than life, who lead our group and specialty into the future while holding steadfast to patients and their outcomes.
Our hearts are burdened, but we remain committed to his vision.
