On day 4 of #FGM awareness week at SheRose, we’re going to be sharing information on FGM in Malawi. FGM is largely carried out in secret, which makes it difficult for statistics to be obtained, which in turn makes it difficult to create policy’s and strategies to end the practice

On day 3 of #FGM awareness week at SheRose, we’re going to be telling you about where you can seek support if you are in fear of being subject to (or have already been subject to) FGM. You can visit the NHS website for information on clinics near you.

The effects of FGM on education are largely overlooked. FGM can be costly, which means after the procedure many parents are unable to afford to send their daughters to school. The further effects of this are that being out of education can lead to an increase in child marriages.

FGM can negatively impact both the mental and physical health of the girls subject to it. It can cause depression and PTSD. It can also cause infections, problems urinating and many other health issues.
