“Before we got married, I told my husband that if we were blessed with daughters, they would never go through FGM,” she said.

For some families, the decision to abandon FGM can come at a high personal cost.
In Wellingara Ba, that cost was the end of a marriage.

#endFGM
Ending the Practice of FGM has become challenging in the Gambia, with the recent attempt by religious, traditional and some lawmakers to repeal the anti-FGM Law of 2015. Though the attempt to repeal the Women's Amendment Act 2015 was not successful, it gave rise to pro-FGM camps and the spread of misinformation regarding the practice.

Today, the World Marks World Population Day on the theme "Empowering young people to create the families they want in a fair and hopeful World".
The preliminary report on the recently concluded Census shows a growing, youthful population with a high birth rate. As a country, Gambia should devise means of investing in its youthful population to help them create the families they want.
We also need to make sure that our women and girls have access to contraceptives wherever they are and whenever they need them.
Our societies should allow women to have a say over their bodies, including when and how often they want to reproduce.
We wish you a happy World Population Day 2025.

There are two things, one is we want to make sure that the baby who is being breastfed is not weaned very soon. Before, the thinking was that if a woman gets pregnant the breast milk is no longer good for the one who is sucking.
