A question I keep getting: why didn't Fauci destroy his COVID diaries once he saw how the political winds were blowing?

From what's now on the record: he probably never had that option. Fauci was not keeping a private diary in the way people assume.

HHS Secretary RFK Jr. says his department spent eight months locating the diary — more than 1,100 pages spanning December 2019 to December 2022 — after finding it scattered across 11 separate government servers. HHS then handed the material to Senators Rand Paul and Ron Johnson.

Fauci wasn't told in advance, either that the diary had been found or that it would be released in full.

That timeline is critical. These entries appear to have been created and stored on official government servers throughout Fauci's final years running NIAID — which would make them federal records subject to retention rules, not a personal journal he carried home and could simply shred.

One caveat: the "eight months, 11 servers" detail comes solely from an account Kennedy gave to Fox News. No independent document or second official has confirmed those specifics yet. But, for this answer, I'm assuming it is accurate.

Rand Paul gives Fauci one last chance to answer the question and stop breaking the law by invoking 5th Amendment rights that no longer apply because of his presidential pardon.

Fauci refuses.

A vote certifying his contempt is scheduled for next week. If it passes, he is referred to the Justice Department for criminal prosecution.

Contempt of Congress is punishable by up to a year in jail. Perjury carries up to five years.

Once you know that, it suddenly makes sense how Fauci acted this whole hearing. He would rather spend a year in jail than admit what he's done or perjure himself.

PAUL: "I'm going to give you one more opportunity to COMPLY WITH THE LAW... Did you destroy any federal record or tell anyone else to?"

FAUCI: "I respectfully decline to answer..."

PAUL: "Because you refuse to answer, citing a privilege (5th Amendment) that is SUPPORTED because of your pardon and after being denied to do so, this committee has scheduled a vote next week on a resolution certifying your contempt."
