Two young British girls on a night out, visibly scared.

A bloke notices something isn’t right, walks over and starts asking if they’re okay. He checks whether the men hanging around them are actually WITH them.

The girls say NO.

One of the men is stood outside the club in jogging bottoms. The girls look terrified.

So this stranger refuses to just walk past and mind his own business. He stays with them and tells the men straight:

STOP HARASSING GIRLS.

And afterwards? The girls THANK him for stepping in.

This is what women and girls are dealing with.

A night out. Walking to a mate’s. Going to the shops. Getting home at night. Constantly looking over your shoulder and wondering whether that bloke following you is going to leave you alone.

And apparently we’re supposed to pretend nobody can see what’s happening?

Last night, a documentary aired that I had been working on with Sandpaper films for 3 years. I kept quiet about this knowing that when it aired, people would see the reality of Barrow In Furness. People would see (finally) what some haven’t been able to say before.

It’s raw. It’s unfiltered and it’s the truth about our town. It’s kicking because the way the media works, you can film for hours and hours and only a small percentage will be aired. I know I was certainly drained after the hours (over 3 years) I put into this and I have no doubt the other girls were too. For some of the girls, it was their first time telling their story publicly. My heart goes out to them- I know how difficult it is to relive your trauma in order to protect our future generations. Everybody sees the girls that stepped forward, nobody sees how draining the days after are.

I want to make a statement and make it very clear that although the documentary has been advertised with the laser focus on Ellie Williams (I believe this was done to make it a popular gossip), there is other girls in there that deserve to be heard.

Ellie Williams certainly lied, there’s no doubt about that. I’ve been the first to call her out on her lies. But I’ve also been the first to defend what I know is true. It’s heart breaking because even if she did come forward now and tell the truth, she would not be believed. Unfortunately, that’s her own fault & responsibility, something that she will have to deal with for the rest of her life.

The series certainly leaves more question than conclusion, which I personally believe is a good thing. I believe that it has certainly raised the awareness that was needed around here.
