Ten American cities just joined The Pact of Free Cities – a global coalition of mayors dedicated to protecting democracy even if their national governments don't. More will join soon. What that means for democracy, in my new post 👇

My newest book is A Matter of Life and Death by @speakingtiger14
I look at the profound failure globally to assure affordable & quality healthcare to all people
India's healthcare is one of the most privatised in the world
I speak of the imperative to free healthcare from profit
Even by the standards of a country ranking 157 of 180 nations in the World Press Freedom Index, the reaction of the authorities to the ‘Cockroach Janata Party’ is beyond extraordinary. The public response to that imaginative prank should have signalled to them a deep discontent, even distress, among young people. Instead, as The Indian Express reported, it was framed as jeopardising the country’s ‘national security’ and ‘posing a threat to the sovereignty of India.’ Decades ago, the Malaysian lawyer and poet Cecil Rajendra wrote this brilliant poem that captures the idiocy of it better than any pompous editorialising could (not that our ‘mainstream’ media would dare do even that much).
The censorship has begun - the powers that be are now targetting a law student who dared criticised the Supreme Court's abuse of its contempt power: https://t.co/9W1wLGrQiP
From the NLS Blog: Sherley Dokiburra analyses how oil-producing countries & companies hijacked the conversation resulting in a stalemate b/w member states on a production cap for virgin plastic at the recently concluded Global Plastics Treaty https://t.co/AOl5Y070fY

My professional life, my private life and my contemplative life collided at high velocity in this essay. Thanks to Pearls & Irritations for having the courage to publish it. https://t.co/1ro2wvBgrg
So brilliant to see the students of NLU Delhi standing against the wrongful removal of safai karmacharis under the facade of "contract work." This is what solidarity in law schools means.

Many, many questions, but two stand out:
(a) What kind of documentation will be required to establish belonging to a particular faith?
(b) *If* the underlying justification for the Act is the protection of *persecuted* minorities, why is there no mention of that in the Rules?
The reporting that my friend & colleague @ggreenwald has done in Brazil has been incredible, brave and has had a tremendous impact. He has done this reporting under threats from the fascist Bolsonaro regime. This is a tyrant's desperate attempt to silence independent journalism.
So almost everything that the J&K admin did - from indefinite suspension of telecom and internet, to secret 144 orders - is ruled as unconstitutional by the Supreme Court.
No immediate relief for the people of the State though!

Monotheistic and monolithic are two vastly different words.
Far be it from me to say any religion - including my own - is above atrocities committed in its name, but equating Hindutva with Judaic religions to make the fundies go haw is not remotely a sensible tactic.
