I have watched how the floods have ravaged Kenya 🇰🇪 with pain and also my heart in my hands (as we say in my language Bemba). Not just because I lived in Kenya for 18 years but my children are half Kenyan and they are asking a lot of questions about what’s going on.
I watched the video by @LarryMadowo below showing the road I used everyday either to run 🏃🏾♀️ to Karura or my kids cycling 🚴♀️ to school near by. I pretty much explored the many corners of this forest and as an ecologist I was blown away 😱. The number of springs and running through this forest 🌳 are just impressive and truly speaks to the original name of the city - which in the Maa language of the Maasai Nairobi is “Enkare Nyrobi” translates the place of cool waters 💦. And do note that this city on average is above 1,500m above sea level. #ConnectivityOfEcosystems
Now a small and short lesson in geography and the screenshot of Larry’s news clip (please listen to it). Some may wonder - so it seems that where he is standing, just some ordinary flood happened. NO - he is right next to a small river actually which when used to run past had quite a strong current. Now look at the screen shot of Karura forest and link to Runda - No site of this river on the map EXCEPT this river even goes through the forest. I have taken the liberty to just indicate the location of the river 🙏🏾
I want to say that what the AMAZING women of the villages around Karura Forest together with the incredible @WangariMaathai did - is a blessing on many levels. Now look at those images from Karura (thanks to @karurafriends). While there are torrents of flows, flooded areas - believe me - the wetlands, the trees and the entire ecosystem of this forest has acted as a buffer for many parts of Nairobi. IT•COULD•HAVE•BEEN•WORSE!!!! Never underestimate the POWER of fighting to save a space that saves us from entire disasters 🙏🏾
The El Niño effect (predicted months ago) is what has turned the country into a whole flooded area. Tragic - the realities of many things: climate change, terrible city planning, blockages of drains from plastics and other debris and reclaiming spaces where rivers flowed and wetlands existed.
Alas rivers have MEMORY 🙏🏾 @RamsarConv
May the souls of those lost rest in eternal peace 🙏🏾

Yesterday evening I had the honour of attending the movie premier vide an invitation by the Ambassador of Sweden to Kenya.
The film depicts the intersection between the climatic crisis and injustices against children's rights.
The climate crisis is indeed a child rights crisis

Engaged with Mr. Luis Tineo the Interim CEO at Climate Investment Funds and Alana Chelangat an 11 year old image advocate and author on the need for intergenerational and collaborative action towards climate action and climate justice.
Climate change is not just an environmental challenge; it's a profound threat to our children's future, impacting their health, education, and well-being. The decisions we make today will determine the world they inherit tomorrow. Meet Alana, a young climate advocate and author♥️
Led a few youths to a Climate Action Game at the Children and Youth Pavillion yesterday. This game peaked my interest as it encourages sustainable development through creating an equilibrium between Environmental, Economical and Social Advancement.
