Chioma is 25.
She just got a job with a first generation bank.
Salary: ₦220,000/month.
To look the part, she moved out of her mother’s house in Mushin and relocated to Lekki, sharing a BQ with five other girls.

Month one:
Day 1: New eyelashes and nails - ₦50k
Day 2: Deposit for a new iPhone - ₦100k
Day 3: Subscriptions, lunch at work- ₦50k
Day 4: Broke.

Then Chioma met Chinedu.
A nice young man.
Good job.
Seemed responsible.
Has his life together.
He took her number.

He called her that night and the conversation was flowing.
They had a lot in common.
They spoke late into the night until they remembered they had to be up early for work so they reluctantly hung up.

Chinedu woke up happy.
He thinks he found the one.
He is walking around like he was floating.
Now he understands what it means to "be on cloud nine."

At lunch break, he whips out his phone to chat up Chioma.
Just then a text came in from Chioma.
His heart pounds with excitement.

It is a voice note.
He hits play immediately.
"Hi Chinedu, I hope you had a good night. I need a favour. I know we are in talking stage which means we will still date. I need 300k to change my wardrobe for work. It will make me very happy if you give it to me."

He hit play again to be sure his mind wasn't playing tricks on him.

Same message.

Just like that, it dawned on Chinedu that his "ChiChi 2027" had come down crashing.

All because Chioma decided to live above her means.

Don't be like Chioma.

When money enters your hand, do not: Upgrade your lifestyle
Start performing wealth instead of building it.

Moving out of your parent's house too early is one of the most expensive financial decisions young people make.
Rent.
Transport.
Food.
Utility bills.
Social pressure.
All hitting the same small salary.

If you have the privilege, stay with your parents longer.
Use that period to:
• Build an emergency fund
• Clear any debts
• Learn how to manage money
• Start investing small amounts

Don’t rush to look successful.
Build first.
And you won’t need to bill strangers during the talking stage.
