The amount of misinformation being shared in Hawaii is astonishing. The governor keeps quoting a count of 89k short-term rentals in the state.

While he hasn't shared the source of his data, it aligns with figures calculated by the local hotel lobbyist group.

What does the data actually show? There are just 40,000 active short-term rentals in the entire state, less than half of the amount quoted by the governor.
We estimate that those 40k listings generated nearly $3 billion in revenue for hosts and significantly more in economic activity in the state.
As communities in Hawaii now look to pass their own legislation, its imperative that the are looking at real data and not just what it fed to them by the hotel lobby looking to protect their own interests.

Recently I found what I think is the sole copy of the 1971 Waikiki Transportation Plan. Compared to what exists today, it was a fairly radical guide to make Waikiki more pedestrian friendly, with an emphasis on pedestrian malls and plazas. Ala Wai promenade would’ve also been 1/2
