Somali pirates are currently holding six commercial vessels and more than 90 Seafarers as hostage, pushing piracy activity to a ten-year high amid a shift in international naval resources.

The ships, including oil tankers have been seized since April across the Gulf of Aden and the western Indian Ocean.

The Somali pirates demanded $3 million for the release of 10 Pakistani sailors held hostage since April, 2026. The waters off the Horn of Africa are experiencing the biggest surge in piracy in more than a decade. #Somalia

News: #Sudan says it downed ‘hostile’ drone launched from #Ethiopian territory

Sudan’s Defense Ministry said it shot down a “hostile” drone over #Blue_Nile State near the border with Ethiopia, alleging that the aircraft had been launched from Ethiopian territory.

In a statement cited by Anadolu Agency on Sunday, the ministry said the drone was flying over the #Kurmuk area in southeastern Sudan when it was intercepted. Sudanese authorities did not provide further details about the drone or identify who they believe operated it.

A top Al-Shabaab commander was killed in a military operation in Somalia’s Middle Shabelle region, the Ministry of Defence said.

The operation took place on the afternoon of August 21 in Tawakal, about five kilometres from Ali Gaduud Mosque.

The ministry identified the commander as Abdullahi Mahmoud Odowaa, also known as Faadhuud, saying he joined Al-Shabaab in 2009.

Faadhuud was accused of overseeing reconnaissance for the group, including identifying locations for secret bases and routes used to organise attacks against government forces. #Somalia

News: #Ethiopia’s #Eurobond restructuring wins creditor approval, but warrant raises concerns

Ethiopia has secured approval from its official creditors for an agreement to restructure its $1 billion Eurobond, marking a major step toward resolving the country’s external debt crisis. However, concerns remain over a new financial warrant included in the deal.

The Official Creditor Committee, co-chaired by #France and #China, said the agreement reached between Ethiopia and private bondholders in June meets the #G20 Common Framework’s requirement for comparable treatment of creditors.

Under the proposed restructuring, the Eurobond’s principal would be reduced by 12%, from $1 billion to $880 million. The restructured bond would carry a 6.15% interest rate and mature in July 2029. Ethiopia would also pay around $99 million in accrued interest.
The agreement follows an earlier rejection by official creditors of a deal with private bondholders, which they said did not provide debt relief comparable to that offered by official creditors.

The latest agreement includes a “New Money Warrant,” allowing existing bondholders to subscribe to a future Ethiopian Eurobond of up to $1 billion on predetermined terms. Ethiopia could alternatively settle the warrant in cash, with the payment capped at $90 million.
The Official Creditor Committee warned that the warrant could potentially provide private creditors with benefits beyond those received by official creditors. It said it could seek adjustments to its own debt treatment if that occurs.

The committee described the warrant as an innovative compromise but stressed that its approval should not set a precedent for future debt restructurings.
Ethiopia defaulted on its Eurobond in 2023 and has been negotiating with creditors under the G20 Common Framework since 2021. Bondholders must still formally approve the restructuring before it can take effect.

#BREAKING: An airstrike has just targeted a skiff carrying dozens of people off the coast of Jiifle in the Nugaal Region, #Puntland, with up to 7 people killed, as confirmed local residents.

It is not clear which country carried out the airstrike, but it was reported that a few days ago the Somali-hijacked vessel MV Lutuf, flying the Cameroon flag, was brought to the area.

This is the third airstrike to occur within a week off the coast of Nugaal, which has caused casualties.

#Somalia' Federal Government itself has stated that it is aware of any airstrike that takes place in the country, however it has not yet provided details on these airstrikes that have affected civilians and returning pirates.

The ambassadors were received with full diplomatic honours and a guard of honour from the armed forces. News: #NASA study finds black carbon pollution in #Addis_Abeba far higher than in 3 U.S. cities

A NASA-funded study has found that average black carbon concentrations in Addis Abeba were approximately 4 to 9 times higher than levels recorded in 3 U.S. metropolitan areas monitored by the same mission — #Los_Angeles, #Atlanta and #Boston.

The findings, published in Environmental Science & Technology: Air, are based on data collected between 2022 and 2025 from 10 air-quality monitoring sites across Addis Abeba under NASA’s Multi-Angle Imager for Aerosols (#MAIA) project.

The NASA findings add to previous warnings about deteriorating air quality in Addis Abeba. In August 2025, #Swiss air-quality technology company IQAir reported that the #Ethiopian capital ranked among the world’s most polluted major cities, placing fourth globally on 6 August.
