Dear @SenTedCruz , I am sure you are aware of the reconstruction efforts going on in Somalia, which include considerable US counter terrorism engagement in south and north Somalia (including Puntland in the northeast, where many IS fighters have been killed in the past months). I guess you know that Mogadishu and several other cities of Somalia are experiencing a stable economic boom since years, manifesting itself in massive construction and new businesses opening. Certainly, you are also aware of the ongoing formation of the new federal member state (supported by the government in Mogadishu) called North-East-State in the central north of Somalia, which is a territory claimed (but not controlled) by the government of the self-declared Republic of Somaliland. Indeed, the government in Hargeysa lost control over parts of this area in a bloody war in the first half of 2023 in which the Somaliland army relentlessly attacked civilians in a strategically important town called Lasanod, which is today the center of the new emerging federal member state just mentioned. Recognizing Somaliland today would not only disturb the political reconstruction ongoing in Somalia as a whole (including US-supported counter-terrorism) but also, most likely, lead to new civil war in the north. Somaliland is much less popular among Somalis (even in the north) than you might think. In essence, it is strongly backed only by members of ONE clan called Isaaq. Yet, members of several other clans in the region (including Dhulbahante, Warsangeli and Fiqishini in North-East-State, Majeerteen, Deshishe and others in Puntland, Gadabursi in Awdal region near Djibouti and members of various minority groups including Gabooye across the north), as a rule, reject Somaliland's secession and do, in their territories, adhere to Somali unity. External recognition is, at this moment, highly irresponsible. Let Somalis sort out their issues first. They are on a better way today than they have been over the past thirty years. What interests does the USA have in Somaliland (aka Isaaq-land) that it cannot pursue with the help of administrations in Djibouti, Puntland or Somalia that are all pro-Somali unity?
