.@daera_ni Waste data trends continue. Waste levels up, recycling plateauing, landfill down, and energy recovery up significantly. What they don’t reveal is that energy recovery is happening abroad as we rely on waste exports from ports like Warrenpoint to Scandinavia. This is unsustainable and unreliable and of course we also export the value of our waste for others to realise. Precarious.
.@bbctheview Without the necessary waste infrastructure to manage our own non-recyclable waste, we rely on volatile export markets and ship our waste across Europe where it fuels energy from waste plants there. All while we continue to import fossil fuels to meet local energy needs. Highly illogical, economically & environmentally unsustainable and increasingly risky #BBCTheView
NI is facing a looming waste crisis in the absence of modern waste infrastructure here. Read more ⬇️ and watch @LouiseMCullen@bbctheview later which investigates what we are doing with our waste and the exposure we face. https://t.co/JzqIOzdL4D
The @Indaver_IRL_UK 'Tipping Point' report warns of a looming waste crisis in NI. Unlike our wastewater emergency, this one has a clear, funded and deliverable solution: the @_arc21 project which brings many economic and environmental benefits. Read more👉https://t.co/9uDujdZqJW
We're looking forward to the Carranstown Environmental Projects Grant Scheme awards tonight, funded by Indaver and managed by @MeathCountyCouncil.
Over €3 million has gone to nearby organisations in the last 15 years, improving lives all around us here in Duleek. 🎉
Relying on volatile waste exports to manage NI residual waste in these turbulent geo-political times is neither sustainable or responsible. Self-reliance is a strategic imperative and the @_arc21 project provides a viable and funded solution. Learn more: https://t.co/zE7tW5eDbn
A preventable crisis is still a crisis. The recent @Indaver_IRL_UK 'Tipping Point' report warns how Northern Ireland could soon face dual infrastructure failures - in waste & wastewater.
The good news? We have a viable and funded solution ready to go: the @_arc21 /becon project. Learn more: https://t.co/jS3NSX65HH
The 2013 Mills report on Mobuoy - recommendation 8 makes it clear that NI needs to ‘create the necessary new strategic waste infrastructure which can be more easily regulated and monitored’ The @_arc21 residual waste project is a key part of that infrastructure need and needs to progress to tackle #wastecrime
12 years on from Mills report into illegal waste scandal at Mobuoy and NI has still to action many of its recommendations to stop a repeat of this. This includes the development of modern/integrated waste infrastructure which will deliver more transparent monitoring and control of waste movements. That’s exactly what @_arc21 has been trying to develop for over a decade. We can’t delay any longer.
The @Indaver_IRL_UK Tipping Point report warns of a looming waste crisis in Northern Ireland unless urgent action is taken soon. Unlike our wastewater emergency, this one has a clear, funded and deliverable solution: the @_arc21 project. Don't ignore the warning signs.

We note that the consultation analysis that informed the PfG recognises that “non-recyclable waste that we produce should also be recognised as resource” The @_arc21 project is designed specifically to maximise the value of this resource here through recycling & energy recovery.
We welcome the @niexecutive PfG. The @_arc21 project supports the aspirations to grow a globally competitive & sustainable economy, protect the environment and deliver decarbonisation targets. The waste sector must meet future climate action plans and this infrastructure is key.
Waste management is one of the larger costs that councils incur and from April 1st landfill taxes are set to increase by 21.5% per tonne with further increases ahead. Policy is to encourage sustainable waste management but NI needs modern local infrastructure to do that.
Welcome words from new @deptinfra Minister @LizK1988 Of course integrated waste #infrastructure which manages waste in a responsible & sustainable manner is a basic requisite of any modern and successful economy. We hope it is given the same priority as other NI infrastructure.
“These claims and calculations from No-Arc21 have simply no basis in fact.”

As one of those contentious and longest delayed decisions we have to hope that the NI Executive prove @NewtonEmerson wrong. Without a decision on much needed waste infrastructure we are at serious risk of adding a waste crisis to our existing water/wastewater crisis @bbctheview
The recent @NIAuditOffice report on NI Waste Management lays out the risks associated with relying on waste export. It recommends that @DAERA_NI considers contingency plans to deal with residual waste in the future, other than by landfill. The
@_arc21 project is that contingency!
.@daera_ni waste stats show NI is increasingly reliant on waste export to manage black-bin waste where energy recovery from waste is +29.7% in 2023/24 - the vast majority of which happens abroad. This is unsustainable & risky as NI is exposed to volatile European waste markets.
Is an END in sight for the long-running @_arc21 residual waste project? @ENDSW_B sectoral specialist thinks it may be closer now as project features at number 2 in their Top 10 #EnergyfromWaste projects most likely to progress in 2025. Read more here.
